Threefolding is the short-form name for the social movement Rudolf Steiner launched in Stuttgart in April 1919, and for the working principle behind it. Where the term threefold social organism names the structure, threefolding names the activity: the ongoing, institution-by-institution work of letting cultural life govern itself, political life secure equal rights, and economic life associate around real need rather than under state or capital command.

The instances of social arrangements given here make clear that this is not an attempt to revive the three old "estates" of the Plough, the Sword and the Book. The intention is the very opposite of such a division into classes. It is the social organism itself that will be functionally membered, and just through this fact man will be able to be truly man. He himself will have his own life's roots in each of the three members. He will have a practical footing in that member in which he stands by way of occupation. His relation to the other two will be actual and living, developing out of his connection with their institutions. Threefold will be the social organism as apart from man, forming the groundwork of his life, and each man as a man will unite the three members.
What it Means Today
The word threefolding survived its first political defeat. By 1922 the original Stuttgart campaign had wound down, but the practical question it raised never closed: how do you keep cultural life, political life, and economic life from collapsing into one another? Wherever a school refuses state curriculum control, a court refuses corporate capture, or a farm refuses to treat its workers as priced commodities, the threefolding question is being answered in concrete terms. The Bund für Dreigliederung of 1919 became, after a long quiet century, a working network: Camphill communities running their own schools and farms since 1940, Triodos Bank financing only economic activity that has cultural or ecological purpose, Sekem in Egypt building a biodynamic farm with its own school, clinic, and worker assembly, contemporary commons economists from Elinor Ostrom onward studying how associative groups govern shared resources without state command.
Treat threefolding as a diagnostic, not a blueprint. In any institution you are part of, ask which sphere is currently doing the work, and which sphere is hiding behind it. A university funded by state contracts is no longer fully cultural. A workplace dispute settled by who has more money is no longer fully a rights question. The practice begins where you can see the confusion and refuse it, one decision at a time. Threefolding was Steiner's 1919 answer to the social question. A central demand of threefolding is that labour cease to be a commodity. Threefolding answered the social ruin Steiner diagnosed in the karma of untruthfulness.
