The planetary region where a soul's karma is chiefly worked out between death and rebirth, stamping the character of its next earthly life.
The Planetary Sphere of Karmic Elaboration in Anthroposophy is the particular planetary region, whether Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, or Saturn, in which a human individuality does the main work of shaping its karma during the long passage between death and a new birth. Rudolf Steiner set this out in the Breslau lectures of June 1924, published in English as Karmic Relationships: Esoteric Studies, Volume VII (GA 239). Most souls, he said, complete the greater part of that work in the Sun sphere alongside the Exousiai, Dynamis, and Kyriotetes, while the moral and spiritual remainder is further elaborated in the Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn spheres. Whichever sphere carries the greater share stamps the returning life. Saturn karma yields natures fired by future ideals because their gaze was held on the past, and Jupiter karma returns earlier faculties recast as wisdom. For a modern reader it is the mechanism by which a biography acquires a cosmic address.
The planetary sphere of karmic elaboration answers a question Steiner's karma lectures kept circling: where, exactly, is destiny made? Not on Earth, and not in one undifferentiated heaven. Between death and a new birth the soul passes outward through the planetary spheres, and the sphere it dwells in longest, working with the hierarchies native to it, gives the coming incarnation its particular grain.
In Steiner's Own Words
We learned how the spiritual Beings belonging to a planetary sphere and the whole spiritual constitution of that sphere penetrate and work into what a man brings with him when after death he is journeying onward in the spiritual world. Certain things were said about the working of the Jupiter sphere. The Saturn sphere works in a still more drastic way. I told you that even with the insight of Initiation one must have passed the sixty-third year and be able to look back over the period of life between the ages of fifty-six and sixty-three before it is possible to acquire independent vision of all the connections, and, in the setting of the weaving spiritual life of the whole Universe, discern how the Saturn sphere works upon man.
What it Means Today
The line of practice running directly out of these lectures is Astrosophy. In December 1923, at the Christmas Conference, Steiner appointed Elisabeth Vreede to lead the Mathematical-Astronomical Section of the School of Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum in Dornach. In 1927 a young German researcher, Willi Sucher, came across a lecture in which Vreede repeated Steiner's remarks about the configuration of the heavens at the moment a person crosses into the spiritual world. Sucher wrote to her, she answered warmly, and she invited him to Dornach in 1928. Out of that meeting grew the discipline he worked at until his death in 1985: cosmic biography, the practice of reading a life against the sky of its own death rather than only the sky of its birth.
Where conventional natal astrology fixes a chart at birth and treats it as a verdict, Astrosophy treats the death chart as the opening of the karmic elaboration and the following birth chart as its result. That is the movement Steiner describes in GA 239.
Thalira synthesis: the planetary sphere of karmic elaboration is the single Steiner idea that turns astrology inside out, because it makes a horoscope the record of work already done by the dead rather than a sentence passed on the living.
The practical use is narrower than prediction. It asks a reader to look at the qualities that arrived unchosen and consider that they were composed rather than issued.
