What are the Mercury Mysteries?
The Mercury Mysteries in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's name for the ancient mystery centres in which the art of healing was imparted to human beings directly by the Mercury Beings, spiritual beings who have never worn an earthly body. Steiner described them in Karmic Relationships, Volume V (GA 239), in lectures given at Prague, Paris and Breslau in 1924. In those sanctuaries, he said, the priest-healers did not study medicine as a human science. They conversed at the altar with the Being known simply as the God Mercury, and what they received was treated as a gift of the Gods rather than a human discovery. The same Mercury Beings, in Steiner's account of life between death and a new birth, take from the soul the spiritual after-effects of illness once the moral residue has been left behind in the Moon sphere. Anthroposophic medicine, founded with Ita Wegman in the 1920s, works from this inheritance.
The Mercury Mysteries were healing sanctuaries, not schools of medicine. Steiner placed them among the oldest mystery centres, where the instruction came from beings who had never lived on Earth and who could see illness whole. Antiquity did not call this knowledge research. It called it revelation, and the physician who held it was a priest before he was a practitioner.
What did Steiner actually say?
Then, too, men recognised that the truth concerning the nature of illnesses can be known only when the truth comes from the Mercury Beings; hence all medical knowledge, all knowledge of healing, was the secret of the Mercury Mysteries. In such Mysteries a man was not in the same position as he is in the universities of to-day. Higher Beings from the regions of the stars actually worked through the rites enacted in these Mysteries. In those ancient days the Gods themselves were men's teachers, and medicine was the wisdom transmitted to them directly by the Mercury Beings in the Mysteries; hence this ancient medicine was regarded by men as a gift of the Gods.
What it Means Today
The lineage Steiner described did not stay in antiquity. In 1921, three years before the Paris lecture above, the Dutch physician Ita Wegman opened the Klinisch-Therapeutisches Institut at Arlesheim near Dornach, the first clinic built on Anthroposophical medical principles, still operating today as the Klinik Arlesheim. Steiner then placed Wegman at the head of the Medical Section of the School of Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum, constituted at the Christmas Conference of 1923 and 1924. The book the two of them wrote together, published in 1925 as GA 27, carries a title that reads like a direct answer to the Mercury lectures: Fundamentals of Therapy, an Extension of the Art of Healing through Spiritual Knowledge. Not a new science of healing, an extension of an older one. Wegman's clinicians were asked to read an illness as a biography rather than as a lesion, and to treat the patient as one whole in which soul and spirit are caught up in every disease process, the argument Steiner made in the Breslau lecture of 8 June 1924.
Thalira synthesis: the Mercury Mysteries mark a time when medicine was nobody's property. What the priest-healer received at the altar was never his to sell, and a practitioner in this lineage inherits that condition, not the ritual. The working test is not whether a clinic prescribes mistletoe or rhythmical massage. It is whether the physician still treats the healing knowledge as borrowed.
