The gradual return of ego and astral body into the sleeping organism, entering at the fingers and toes on waking and reaching completion only toward midday.
The Daily Circuit of Ego and Astral Body in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's account of how the two higher members of the human being leave and re-enter the physical and etheric bodies across each twenty-four hours. Steiner set it out on 14 June 1924 at Breslau, in the eighth lecture of the cycle published as Karmic Relationships, Volume VII (GA 239). At sleep the ego and astral body widen outward and describe a circle. On waking they do not drop back in at once: they enter through the limbs, by way of the fingers and toes, and travel upward through the organism only by degrees, filling it toward midday and afternoon. A complementary revolution is completed during the night. The sleeper still feels wholly present from the first moment, because spiritual activity is effective in places other than the one where it is centred. The circuit sits inside Steiner's karma teaching: what rises with the ego on waking carries the residue of earlier earthly lives.
The Daily Circuit of Ego and Astral Body names a rhythm Steiner asked his Breslau listeners to take literally rather than pictorially. Sleep is not a pause and waking is not a switch. The higher members leave along an expanding curve at night and return along the limbs at dawn, so the morning self is genuinely less inhabited than the afternoon self.
In Steiner's Own Words
In the evening, when sleep begins, the ego and astral body move outwards. We will draw quite diagrammatically how the two members widen out, expand, but describe a kind of circle. In the morning, on waking, the ego and the astral body pass into the physical body again through the limbs, actually by way of the fingers and toes. The fact is that a circle is described and this statement must be taken more literally than is usually imagined. In reality, when a normal human being wakes in the morning, the picture seen by clairvoyance is not of the whole astral body and the whole ego being immediately within the physical and etheric bodies; on the contrary, ego and astral body pass only slowly and by degrees into the physical body from morning onwards until towards midday and afternoon.
What it Means Today
Sleep science arrived at the same asymmetry from the other side. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young for isolating the molecular machinery of the circadian clock in Drosophila, work that established the body as a population of oscillators rather than a mechanism with an on switch. Beside that molecular picture sits the phenomenon sleep researchers call sleep inertia: the measurable gap between the moment a person is awake and the moment that person is fully capable. Reaction time, working memory and decision quality are depressed immediately after waking and climb back over a window that runs from roughly fifteen minutes to a couple of hours, longest when waking is abrupt and comes out of deep sleep. Steiner described that same gradient in 1924 without instruments, and he gave it a direction: not a general fog lifting, but an occupation moving upward from the periphery toward the head.
Thalira synthesis: the alarm clock is therefore not a neutral device in this scheme, since a jolt at the wrong point in the ascent cuts the morning off from the karmic material Steiner says rises with it, which is why he praised the peasant habit of waking to a church bell and looking away from the window rather than at it.
What follows in practice is modest. Place work that needs the whole person after the ascent rather than before it, and treat the first waking hour as a time for reading what is rising rather than for output.
