Steiner's name for the modern scientific spirit: a two-winged being of mathematics and observation, magnificent in technology, halted before the human being.

The Spirit of Science in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's name for the ruling cognitive authority of the modern West, the Wissenschaftsgeist, which he set out in the public lecture of 18 November 1920 in Freiburg, published as GA 336, The Big Questions of our Time and Anthroposophical Spiritual Knowledge. Steiner pictured it as a single being carried on two wings. The first wing is mathematical thinking, which cannot be gathered from outside and must arise from within the human being, and which reached Europe as the last filtered remnant of the ancient oriental revelation-worldview, recognised in the work of Galileo and Newton. The second wing is faithful observation of the outer world, unknown to the Orient and genuinely Western. Together these wings raised modern technology, industrialism, and the money system. Both, Steiner held, halt at the threshold of the human being, in knowledge and in social life alike.

The Spirit of Science is not a doctrine but a temper of soul, the authority most people in the modern West consult when they want to know what is really the case. Steiner honoured its triumphs without reserve and then put one question to it: what does it know of the human being? His answer was that it stops there, and that the stopping shapes our social life.

And in Europe, that which is, so to speak, the final product of the ancient oriental worldview, that which can arise out of the human being alone, for mathematics cannot be experienced externally, it must arise out of the human being, just like the ancient oriental worldview. And what has come to the European people is recognized by Galileo, by Newton, by the whole Western scientific spirit. It is one wing of the being that flies through the development of modern humanity, carrying the spirit of science to its highest heights. We see the mathematical spirit emerging, penetrating even the atoms with mathematics. The mathematical spirit is one side of modern science. And the other side, the other wing of this creature, which I have symbolically indicated, is what we can call the observation of the external world, the external observation of man himself.

Steiner's two wings are still flying, and modern philosophy of science has named the strain in each one separately, without noticing they belong to a single bird. In February 1960 the Hungarian-American physicist Eugene Wigner, who would take the Nobel Prize in Physics three years later, published “The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences” in Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics. His puzzle is Steiner's first wing exactly: mathematics is spun out of the mathematician with no help from the senses, and yet it fits the outer world with an accuracy Wigner called a gift we neither understand nor deserve. Thirty-five years later David Chalmers named the trouble in the second wing. His 1995 paper “Facing Up to the Problem of Consciousness” in the Journal of Consciousness Studies separated the easy problems of behaviour and report from the hard problem: why outer description should ever yield inner experience. Observation, pressed to its limit, halts before the observer.

Thalira synthesis: these are not two puzzles but one puzzle read off the left wing and the right, and Steiner located the joint in 1920. Mathematics is unreasonably effective because it is the last surviving fragment of a cognition that once read the world from inside; consciousness is hard because the observing wing was never built to land on the being who observes.
