The Heliocentric Mystery Secret in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's disclosure that the sun-centred picture of the planetary system was once guarded mystery knowledge, taught only to pupils who had been led past the Guardian of the Threshold. Steiner set it out in his lecture of 23 February 1921 at The Hague, printed in Waldorf Education and Anthroposophy I (GA 304). The leaders of the ancient mystery centres knew the heliocentric arrangement, but they withheld it, because a soul that still felt itself woven into nature would have suffered what Steiner calls a faintness or swooning when told the earth beneath it was moving. Aristarchus of Samos, reported by Plutarch, betrayed the secret to the outer world. Today the same knowledge reaches every child in an early school lesson, which is why Steiner treated the strengthening of self-consciousness, not the astronomy, as the real task of modern education.
The Heliocentric Mystery Secret names a reversal at the heart of Steiner's account of civilisation. What now counts as elementary astronomy was, in the mystery schools of antiquity, threshold knowledge: a picture of the cosmos so stripped of soul that only a disciplined will could carry it. Modern humanity receives it in childhood, unprepared, and pays for the gift in a quiet homelessness of soul.

How was this preparation accomplished? Pupils had not only to endure great deprivations, but for many years they were also taught by their teachers to follow a moral path in strict obedience. At the same time, their will life was severely disciplined to strengthen their self-consciousness. And only after they had thus progressed from a dim self-consciousness to a more conscious one were they shown what lay ahead of them on the other side of the threshold: namely, the world as it appears to us in outer space according to the heliocentric system of the universe. At the same time, of course, they were also taught many other things that, to us, have merely become part of our general knowledge of the world.
What it Means Today
Thomas Kuhn opened his first book, The Copernican Revolution: Planetary Astronomy in the Development of Western Thought (Harvard University Press, 1957), with an argument historians of science still work through: the move from an earth-centred to a sun-centred cosmos was never only a correction of orbits. The older arrangement carried a whole scheme of value, a universe in which position meant meaning, and once the earth became one planet among several the scheme had nothing left to stand on. Kuhn gave Aristarchus of Samos his pages too, noting that the sun-centred idea was available in Greek antiquity and went nowhere. He read that neglect as a shortage of evidence and of motive.
Steiner, lecturing at The Hague thirty-six years before Kuhn wrote, read the same silence the other way round. The Greeks were not short of the idea. They were shielded from it, and Aristarchus broke the shield.
