Two forms of the loosened etheric body seen in water baptism: the Serpent of ancient Luciferic inspiration, and the Lamb announcing the rulership of the I.
The Serpent and the Lamb in Anthroposophy is the pair of images through which the loosened etheric body revealed itself to candidates baptized by full immersion in water. Rudolf Steiner describes both forms in Deeper Secrets of Human History in the Light of the Gospel of St. Matthew (GA 117, Berlin, 1909). In the millennia before Christ, a person plunged under water beheld the life body as Serpent, the sign that this member had been shaped under Luciferic influence and ancient inspiration; such initiates were called Children of the Serpent. In the days of John the Baptist, some of the baptized beheld the same body as Lamb, the sign that the I, the Ego, had taken rulership on earth and that the Christ was near. The contrast gives readers of the Gospels a precise key to John's words 'Behold the Lamb of God' and to his warning to the Pharisees.
The Serpent and the Lamb name the two ways the etheric body appeared to those baptized by immersion. When the life body loosened from the physical body under water, ancient candidates saw a Serpent, the mark of Luciferic shaping; at the Baptism of John some saw a Lamb instead. Steiner reads this change as the visible signature of a new fact, the I taking command of human nature.

This heritage of the past was portrayed in the etheric body and acted as a formative force upon the physical body. Even to those who had developed beyond the normal stage, such a baptism would have revealed that all their knowledge was founded upon ancient spirit-inspiration. This experience was described as the vision of the soul-nature of the etheric body, in the form of the Serpent. Those who had had this experience were called Children of the Serpent, because they had seen how the Luciferic beings had descended into the being of man; how the etheric body which had given the physical body its form and shape was itself a creation of the Serpent.
What it Means Today
In the same lecture, Steiner completes the picture: in John's day some of the baptized beheld the creative forces of the etheric body no longer as Serpent but as Lamb, and those few could say that man had become a different being, that the Ego now held rulership on earth. Biblical scholarship arrived at this crossroads from the other direction. In The Good and Evil Serpent: How a Universal Symbol Became Christianized (Yale University Press, 2010), James H. Charlesworth of Princeton Theological Seminary documents how serpent imagery across the ancient Mediterranean carried positive meanings, life, wisdom, healing, renewal, before later Christian centuries recast the animal as the emblem of evil. His study takes John 3:14 seriously: Jesus compares his coming crucifixion to the bronze serpent Moses raised in the wilderness, a healing sign, in the same Gospel that opens with the Baptist's cry, 'Behold the Lamb of God.' Charlesworth concludes that the fourth evangelist knew both symbols and used them deliberately.
Steiner's account in GA 117 offers a reading that textual scholarship cannot reach with its own tools: the Serpent and the Lamb are not competing literary emblems but two successive perceptions of one reality, the etheric body, seen once under ancient inspiration and once under the newborn I. Thalira synthesis: where Charlesworth traces the serpent's slow fall from healer to tempter across texts, Steiner locates the turning point in the human constitution itself, so the change of symbol records a change in what the baptized actually saw. The Baptist's harsh words to the Pharisees, that generation of vipers, then stop sounding like abuse and become a diagnosis, a warning that those bound to the Sinai inheritance would still behold the Serpent where others now beheld the Lamb.
