Steiner's term for the darkness that meets the soul after death, the mirror-opposite of earth's faint ego-light, which once hid the spiritual sun-guide.
The Post-Mortem Antithesis of Ego-Consciousness in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's name for the condition that answers earthly self-awareness after death: because the ego-consciousness a person attains on earth burns with so faint a light, its opposite pole, entered when the physical organism is laid aside, is correspondingly dark. Steiner set out this teaching in the ninth study of Cosmology, Religion and Philosophy (GA 25), given at the Goetheanum in Dornach in September 1922, in the chapter titled The Destination of the Ego-consciousness in Conjunction with the Christ-problem. The initiates of the first Christian centuries, he reports, had to warn their pupils that this darkness would keep them from seeing the spiritual sun-guide who leads the soul from the soul-world into the Spirit Land. That, in Steiner's account, is why the Sun-Being descended and accomplished the Mystery of Golgotha. A living connection with that deed, formed while still on earth, remains active after death and lets the soul recognise its guide.
The Post-Mortem Antithesis of Ego-Consciousness describes a law of polarity Steiner found running through the threshold of death: whatever brightness the I attains in a physical body is met, on the far side, by an equal measure of darkness. Weak self-possession on earth means a dim spiritual sky after death. The teaching belongs to Steiner's cosmology rather than his psychology, and it is stated as the reason the Sun-Being had to descend.

At the time of the Mystery of Golgotha and during the first Christian centuries the Initiates had to tell their followers: The degree of Ego consciousness to which you will attain during existence on earth will by its own nature on earth be so light that its antithesis which will begin after death will be so dark that you will not be able to see the spiritual sun-guide. Therefore the sun-being has descended on earth as Christ and has consummated the Mystery of Golgotha. If therefore during your existence on earth you already let yourself be permeated by a lively feeling of your connection with the Mystery of Golgotha, then its significance will become part of life on earth and will continue to be active in man after death. You can then recognize the Christ-guide through this result.
What it Means Today
One week after Steiner closed this course, the same hill in Dornach saw the founding of The Christian Community. The GA 25 studies were given at the Goetheanum between 6 and 15 September 1922, and on 16 September the first Act of Consecration of Man (Menschenweihehandlung) was celebrated there, with Friedrich Rittelmeyer, until then a Lutheran preacher in Berlin, taking up leadership of the new movement. The proximity is not decorative. The ninth study names a problem: the light of earthly self-awareness is too weak to carry sight across the threshold. The movement founded the following week received a sacramental practice aimed at that problem, including a funeral rite whose words are spoken to the one who has died, and which the priest takes up again at intervals in the weeks that follow.
Emil Bock, ordained among the founding priests and leader of the community from 1938, gave most of his writing life to the Gospels, on the working assumption that a relationship with those events is built by attention rather than inherited. Nothing in the ninth study promises the darkness will lift. The claim is narrower and harder: what is formed on this side is the only thing with bearing on the other.
Thalira synthesis: the antithesis behaves like a photographic negative rather than a verdict, since the plate is dark in exact proportion to how faint the light was, and every deepening of connection with the Mystery of Golgotha during earthly life is an exposure made while there is still light to make it.
