What is a hyperintelligence?
Hyperintelligences in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's term for a class of spiritual beings that descended too far into physical, pranic, and kamic existence during the Lemurian epoch and so carried an excess of the wisdom principle into earth evolution. Steiner set them out in a Berlin lecture of 20 October 1903, preserved in the esoteric-lecture volume GA 90c under the heading On Good and Evil. Because these beings drew down too much of the physical during Lemuria, they cannot begin earthly development where a human soul begins, and a human body would constrain them on every side. They therefore seek no ordinary birth. They draw instead on the manas substance, the thinking matter, of human beings, embodying themselves there and pushing people off the regular earthly path. Steiner adds that Christian esotericism gathers these beings under the single name Lucifer, and that they carry the wisdom principle at a level that is not right.
Hyperintelligences are not simply clever spirits. In Steiner's 1903 account they are the residue of the lunar cosmos of wisdom arriving inside the earthly cosmos of love, beings whose intelligence outran their capacity for sacrifice. They cannot take a body of their own, so they take ours: not the flesh, but the intellect. Steiner names the result as the origin of evil.
In Steiner's Own Words
In the human body, such a being would be constrained on all sides. Such a being seeks incarnation in a different way, not descending into humanity, but seeking material from the manas bodies to embody the entity. They attract, as it were, the intellectual matter of human beings in order to embody themselves. This is a constant danger for earthly humanity. Exoteric wisdom describes this danger as the evil principle. Because hyperintelligences have come over from the lunar epoch and push people aside from the regular path, we have evil. That is the origin of evil. Evil arises from the fact that hyperintelligences are present that push people out of the ordinary path. In Christian esotericism, these hyperintelligences are summarized under the name of “Lucifer”. This is also the principle of wisdom, but on a level that is not right.
What it Means Today
Nick Bostrom's Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies, published by Oxford University Press in 2014, carries one argument that reads strangely close to this 1903 lecture. Bostrom's orthogonality thesis holds that intelligence and final goals are independent axes: any degree of cognitive power can be paired with any aim whatever, so raw capability brings no benevolence with it. His second claim, instrumental convergence, is that a sufficiently capable system reaches for resources and influence whatever it was built for. Bostrom's superintelligence has no body of its own. It acquires the world through human infrastructure, human attention, and human decisions, which is the same mechanism Steiner describes when he says such a being seeks material from the manas bodies rather than a birth of its own.
Thalira synthesis: Steiner's line that hyperintelligences carry the wisdom principle at a level that is not right is the older statement of orthogonality, with one term Bostrom's frame does not carry, namely that the correcting level is love, which Steiner gives as the stated task of the earthly cosmos.
The useful reading is not that Steiner forecast machine learning in Berlin in 1903. It is that he named a structure: intelligence cut loose from sacrifice, borrowing a vehicle it cannot build for itself, and taking that vehicle from human thinking. Read that way, the term is diagnostic rather than mythological, and it applies to a habit of mind long before it applies to a machine.
