Karma works magically because moral intent cannot take outward effect in one earthly life; it is realised between death and rebirth with the highest Hierarchies.
The Magical Working of Karma in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's name for the way moral intention, powerless to realise itself directly within one earthly life, becomes outwardly effective through the life between death and a new birth. Steiner set it out at Breslau on 15 June 1924, in the cycle published in English as Karmic Relationships, GA 239. The argument runs like this: on Earth the physical and etheric bodies force moral content back into the soul, so the good may meet misfortune and the bad may prosper. Were a spirit-and-soul impulse able to take direct physical effect, that would be magic, and the human being is no magician inside a single life. Between death and rebirth, working with the Thrones, Cherubim and Seraphim who indwell the metabolic-limb nature, he becomes powerful, and the moral content is forged into the destiny that meets him on his return. Karma is precisely that magical carrying-over.
The magical working of karma names a problem before it names a solution. In one life on Earth the honest often meet hardship and the cruel often prosper, because the moral quality of a soul cannot press itself directly into physical events. Steiner called any direct passage from spirit to matter magic, and denied that the earthly human is a magician. The magic, he said, happens elsewhere, and later.
In Steiner's Own Words
Just imagine that you bore within your soul a moral content that quite justifiably you considered could be capable of creating a favourable world-situation and that you could actually bring it about. What would you be then? You would be magicians, not typical men of the Earth! For when a power of spirit-and-soul is brought to direct expression, that is an essentially magical achievement. In our present cycle of existence man is no magician in the single life between birth and death. But he is a magician when, together with the Beings of the Hierarchies, he is active between death and a new birth and is able to continue these activities when he again descends into life on Earth. The karmic development through these two entirely different modes of existence is in fact the process where the human being works magically.
What it Means Today
The clearest modern working of this idea belongs to Coenraad van Houten (1922 to 2013), the Dutch educator who co-founded the Centre for Social Development at Emerson College, Forest Row, in 1975, and directed it until 1993. Van Houten came out of the Biography Work that Bernard Lievegoed had opened in the Netherlands in the mid-1970s, and he took it somewhere narrower. His question was what becomes of the life forces released once a person is fully born at twenty-one, and whether an adult can turn them into conscious learning. His answer is Destiny Learning, set out in Practising Destiny: Principles and Processes in Adult Learning (Temple Lodge Publishing, 2000), a sevenfold path travelled in a group rather than alone. A participant brings one real biographical event, retells it stripped of interpretation, and carries it through steps that end in what van Houten called karmic knowledge. He was a member of the Social Science Section at the Goetheanum, so the framing stays Steiner's own.
Thalira synthesis: what a Destiny Learning group is actually rehearsing is the after-death labour Steiner described at Breslau, pulled forward into waking life, so that a person begins to do consciously and in miniature what the Thrones, Cherubim and Seraphim otherwise do for him between lives.
The practical consequence is small and it changes a great deal: if moral intention cannot land inside one biography, then reading a life by its outcomes is reading the wrong column.
