Steiner's practice of perceiving a person's earlier earthly lives in the finished shape of the human head, which karma carries from one incarnation to the next.
Reading Karma in the Physiognomy in Anthroposophy is the perceptual discipline Rudolf Steiner set out in his last cycle of karma lectures, given at Breslau in June 1924 and collected as Karmic Relationships: Esoteric Studies (GA 239). Steiner held that karma itself carries the head across from one earthly life to the next, so the finished form of a person's head is past karma made visible to ordinary physical sense-perception. Future karma sits at the opposite pole, in the metabolic-limb system, spiritually concealed and invisible. The head is therefore the one place where destiny already lived through shows itself outwardly. Steiner compared untrained looking to spelling out letters, and trained looking to reading Goethe's Faust: the same signs, a wholly different act. In practice this means observing head-form with reverence and without diagnosis, which is how Waldorf child-study groups and anthroposophic clinicians still approach it, rather than as a system of character types. Reading karma in the physiognomy begins from a plain question: why does every head differ? Steiner answered that the shape belongs to the person's own past, brought over by karma from earlier lives and set into the bone and feature of this one. Two people can look alike and share no destiny at all. What is being read is biography across lifetimes, not temperament in this one.

As I said once before, this trivial fact brings it about that whereas we should otherwise see only about thirty different shapes of letters in books, we have Goethe's Faust, Hegel's Logic, the Bible, and so on, simply because we have learnt to read. In the same way we can learn to read the living things around us. The progress from merely spelling the form of the human head and reading it leads into the secrets of the karma of that particular person. As regards the outwardly perceptible form of the head we may say that every human being has his own particular head; no single individual has exactly the same shaped head as another. Although individuals often look alike, they are not alike in respect of their karma. In the head-formation the karma of a man's past is revealed to physical sense-perception.
What it Means Today
Modern psychology has spent two decades measuring the habit Steiner warned against. Janine Willis and Alexander Todorov, publishing in Psychological Science in 2006, showed that people form confident judgments of trustworthiness, competence and likeability from a face exposed for one tenth of a second, and that those verdicts barely shift when observers are given unlimited time. Todorov gathered the wider research programme into Face Value: The Irresistible Influence of First Impressions (Princeton University Press, 2017), where the finding is plain: the impressions are fast, widely shared between observers, and weak predictors of how anyone actually behaves. Faces broadcast something. It is not character.
Steiner's claim survives that result because it is a different claim. He never said the head reports present character. He said the head is a record of what has already been lived through and closed, carried by karma from a life that ended long ago. The competence a stranger believes he sees runs forward as projection. The form itself runs backward as residue.
Thalira synthesis: the honest use of this teaching is retrospective and never predictive, which is why Steiner set the reading beside literacy rather than beside diagnosis. Faust can be read only after the poem has been written. To read a face as fate still to come inverts the whole picture, because Steiner placed the karma not yet spent in the metabolic-limb system, where on his own account nothing whatever is visible.
