The nebular hypothesis of how the solar system formed, which Steiner treated as the model case of a cosmos described with the spirit removed from it.

The Kant-Laplace Theory in Anthroposophy is the name Rudolf Steiner gave to the eighteenth-century nebular hypothesis of Immanuel Kant and Pierre-Simon Laplace, and to the whole worldview built on top of it. The hypothesis holds that a rotating primeval world nebula contracted, that a central drop of gaseous matter condensed into the Earth, and that the Earth will finally crash back into the Sun as burnt out slag. Steiner examined it in his Berlin lecture of 15 December 1910, printed in Answers of Spiritual Science to the Great Questions of Existence (GA 60), where he read out at length the verdict of the art historian Herman Grimm on the same picture. Steiner never disputed the arithmetic. He objected that the theory explains the solar system as though it were made only of lifeless, inorganic substances and forces, which makes it his standing example of a cosmology with no living being anywhere inside it.

The Kant-Laplace theory is the classical account of how the solar system came to be: a vast rotating nebula, cooling and contracting, shedding rings that became the planets. Steiner met it as the settled cosmology of his Berlin audiences and treated it less as an astronomical mistake than as a spiritual symptom, a picture in which the origin of the Earth asks nothing of spirit.

It is an impossibility not only for feeling and emotion but also for a realisation that truly understands itself. What I mean is the Kant-Laplace theory that explains our solar system as if it were made up only of lifeless, inorganic substances and forces, and as if it had clenched itself out of a giant gas ball. I would like to read to you the passage from Herman Grimm’s Goethe lectures that shows you what this world-view, which is so fascinating, so deeply impressive today, meant for a spirit like Herman Grimm’s:

The picture Steiner’s audiences took for settled fact did not survive the century. Laplace published his version in Exposition du système du monde in 1796, and it ran aground on a measurement: the Sun carries more than ninety-nine percent of the solar system’s mass but only about two percent of its angular momentum, a distribution a simply contracting gas ball cannot produce. Astronomers set the model aside, and it returned in altered form through the Soviet astronomer Viktor Safronov, whose Evolution of the Protoplanetary Cloud and Formation of the Earth and Planets (Moscow, 1969, translated for NASA in 1972) swapped the shrinking nebula for a disc of colliding planetesimals. In November 2014 the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array released its image of HL Tauri, a young star circled by concentric gaps, and the disc stopped being an inference and became a photograph.

None of that reaches Steiner’s objection, which is the interesting part. Safronov’s planetesimals are still described wholly in terms of mass, velocity, and collision, and HL Tauri is read the same way. A century of work corrected the mechanics and left the method where it was, the layer Steiner was pointing at when he called the theory an impossibility for a knowledge that truly understands itself. Thalira synthesis: the Kant-Laplace theory is best read not as a wrong answer but as a competent answer to a question posed with the spirit already subtracted, and the test of any cosmology is whether the beings it describes could plausibly have produced the mind that is describing them.
