Steiner's name for the verdict of physics that all cosmic motion must end in undifferentiated warmth, proof to him that matter has a term and spirit does not.
The Heat Death of the World in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's treatment of the thermodynamic end-state that Rudolf Clausius derived from the second law: because motion converts entirely into heat while heat never converts entirely back into motion, every process in the universe leaves a residue of warmth, and the sum of those residues must finally be all that remains. Steiner set this out in Berlin on 16 March 1911, in the lecture What Has Astronomy to Say about the Origin of the World?, published in GA 60. He did not dispute the physics. He called the result apodictic, binding on matter without appeal. What he disputed was the inference materialism drew from it. If the material universe has a term, then its origin and its continuation cannot lie in matter, and must be sought where Steiner placed them, with the spiritual beings whose activity seized the heat-chaos of Old Saturn and will seize the heat-grave again at the Vulcan stage.
The Heat Death of the World is the cosmic ending that nineteenth-century physics handed to Rudolf Steiner, and that he handed back inverted. Clausius had shown that motion becomes heat completely while heat becomes motion only in part, so a residue accumulates until nothing is left but residue. Steiner accepted the arithmetic and refused the despair. A universe with a guaranteed end, he argued, cannot have held its own beginning.

If we were only able to see movement changing into heat, we could say, the universe could be infinite forwards and backward, does not need to end. However, physics shows in the second law of the mechanical theory of heat that the material processes of the universe head the heat death. One can be convinced: if it were not so difficult, if one must not have such a lot of mathematical prior knowledge and go into difficult physical processes, much more people would know something of Clausius's heat death than it is really the case.
What it Means Today
Steiner's inversion has an unexpected structural echo in contemporary cosmology. In 2010 Roger Penrose published Cycles of Time: An Extraordinary New View of the Universe, setting out what he calls conformal cyclic cosmology. Penrose starts exactly where Clausius left off: follow the universe far enough forward and every massive particle has decayed, leaving only massless radiation. At that point, he contends, nothing survives that can measure a scale, no rest mass to serve as a ruler or a clock. A universe unable to measure its own size is geometrically indistinguishable from a very small one, so the remote future of one aeon can be conformally identified with the Big Bang of the next. Penrose has searched cosmic microwave background data for signatures of this. The wider cosmological community has not accepted the model, and independent analyses through 2024 found no statistically significant evidence for the concentric circles he predicted.
