Steiner's claim that gravity is truly known only from within, through trained self-observation of one's own body growing heavier from about the thirty-second year of life.

The Inner Experience of Gravity in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's teaching that the force physics calls gravitation can only be named, never known, by watching outer bodies fall, and that its real nature discloses itself solely through genuine self-observation of one's own growing heaviness. In Lecture VI of Polarities in the Evolution of Mankind (GA 197), delivered in Stuttgart on 25 July 1920, Steiner states that from about the thirty-second year the human body has to be carried differently: it becomes heavier, and this inward perception of the change is the actual experience of gravity. Watching a stone drop, or measuring acceleration with Atwood's machine, yields only phenomena, because physical matter is not found in the outer world. The bearer of the experience is the physical body observed across time by the I. Its modern application is contemplative body-awareness practice within anthroposophical inner work.

The inner experience of gravity names one of Steiner's most concrete threshold observations: weight is not something we deduce from falling stones but something we undergo. As the years pass, the body announces its own heaviness, and the person trained in self-observation perceives, in that announcement, the very force that textbooks on physics admit they cannot explain. Gravity, for Steiner, is an experience in time before it is a law in space.

From about the thirty-second year onwards we have the experience that the body has to be carried differently, that it becomes heavier. That is our inward experience of gravity, of gravitation. It has to be experienced inwardly. None of the wishy-washy things talked about in mysticism are as important as a concrete fact like this, the inner experience of growing heavier. You cannot gain this experience if some person stands here and lets a stone drop from his hand. You do not observe the gravitational pull by watching a stone drop, for stones have no real materiality. You must observe yourself, this time looking not into space but into time, that is, the way you experience things before and after.

Seven years before Steiner gave this lecture, physics itself had quietly turned toward the felt body. In 1907, at the Bern patent office, Albert Einstein imagined a man falling freely from a roof and realized that while falling the man would not feel his own weight. He later called this "the happiest thought of my life" in his Kyoto lecture of December 1922, and it grew into the equivalence principle at the heart of general relativity, completed in 1915. The decisive step past Newton was not taken with Atwood's machine or any laboratory instrument; it was taken by consulting, in thought, what a human being would inwardly feel. Steiner's Stuttgart lecture of July 1920 stands in the same current and presses it further. Where Einstein used the imagined feeling of weightlessness once, to rewrite the field equations, Steiner asks for the trained, actual feeling of weight: the disciplined noticing, year after year, that the body must be carried differently. Thalira synthesis: Einstein borrowed the body's testimony for a single morning to reform physics, while Steiner asks us to keep that witness on the stand for a lifetime, so that growing heavier becomes an organ of knowledge rather than one happy thought.

The practice this points to is modest and concrete. A person past thirty attends, at intervals, to how carrying the body has changed: the weight of the arms on waking, the different effort of a staircase at forty-five than at twenty-five. Done with the sobriety Steiner describes in Knowledge of the Higher Worlds, this is not melancholy about aging but a first perception of a force from inside.
