Fatigue never comes from life itself. Steiner taught that an organ tires only when consciousness lays work on it from outside.
Fatigue and Consciousness in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's account of tiredness as evidence that soul life and life processes obey different laws. In the Berlin lecture of 27 October 1910, printed in GA 60, Answers of Spiritual Science to the Great Questions of Existence, Steiner rejects the physiological explanation that muscles tire because work wears them out. The heart muscle works day and night without tiring, and a plant, which has life but no consciousness, cannot tire at all. Fatigue appears only where work reaches an organ through a stimulus of consciousness, from the outside world rather than from the life process. Tiredness is therefore diagnostic: wherever it appears, something foreign to life is working into a living being. Steiner extends the same law to ageing and death. Modern exercise physiology reaches a related conclusion, locating the limit of endurance in the brain rather than the muscle.
Fatigue and consciousness belong together in Steiner's physiology: an organ tires only when it is worked from outside, through the senses and the waking soul. The heart, driven by the life process alone, never tires. Plants, having life without consciousness, cannot tire. What we feel at the end of a long day is the friction of two orders of law meeting in one body.

For think, if muscles could really tire, what would happen to the heart muscle? But it never tires; it works day and night, continuously, as do other muscle areas of the human and animal body. This gives you an idea that it is not correct to say that there is anything in the relationship between work and muscle that could explain fatigue. When do animals or humans become tired? When work is not caused by the organism, not by the life process, but when work is caused by the outside world itself, that is, by the world with which a living being can interact through its organs. So when a living being performs work on the basis of its consciousness, the organ in question becomes fatigued. In itself, there is nothing in the life process that could cause fatigue.
What it Means Today
Laboratory fatigue research began in the decades Steiner was lecturing. Angelo Mosso, professor of physiology at Turin, built the ergograph in 1884 to trace the declining lift of a single finger under repeated load, and published La Fatica in 1891, translated into English as Fatigue in 1904. Mosso kept meeting a result his instrument could not explain: colleagues who had just lectured or examined students produced shallower curves than the same men rested. Steiner, speaking in Berlin in 1910, read the same fact from the other side and drew the conclusion Mosso withheld: the added factor is consciousness, and it is foreign to the life process it acts upon.
Exercise physiology has since moved toward that reading. In 2009 Samuele Marcora and colleagues at Bangor University reported in the Journal of Applied Physiology that cyclists who first spent ninety minutes on a demanding computer task reached exhaustion sooner than rested controls, with no difference in heart rate, oxygen uptake, or blood lactate. The body was equally capable. The perception of effort was not.
