Steiner's claim that the earth lost its own growth forces in mid-Atlantean times and stays habitable only because human bodies are returned to it.
The Earth Refreshed by Human Bodies in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's teaching that the planet no longer generates upbuilding forces of its own and is renewed instead by the form-forces carried in every human body handed back to it at death. Steiner set this out in the third lecture of Social Understanding from a Spiritual-Scientific Perspective (GA 191), given at Dornach on 5 October 1919. The claim has three parts. Since the middle of the Atlantean epoch the earth has held only withering forces, having lost the rising powers of the old Polarian and Lemurian ages. A spirit-being descending before conception gives each physical body its structure. At death that structure passes into soil or atmosphere, by burial or by cremation alike, and refreshes the earth for further existence. The bearer is the physical body, which makes the teaching a question about what the living owe the ground.
The earth refreshed by human bodies is the most literal exchange in Steiner's cosmology: the ground lends us substance for a lifetime, and we hand the ground back a shape it can no longer make on its own. Steiner treated the returned body not as waste for disposal but as the single import that keeps a dying planet fit to live on.
In Steiner's Own Words
For our Earth is no longer evolving, and it would have been so long ago that no human being, and perhaps no animal either, could inhabit it today if it were not for the continuous supply of spiritual and soul-like refreshing forces through human bodies. The fact that the Earth is still a habitable place for people today is due to the fact that human bodies are continuously being supplied to it. These always refresh the earth's forces. Since the middle of the Atlantean period, the earth has already been withering. It no longer has the rising powers that it had in the old polar, Lemurian and so on periods. But since the middle of the Atlantean period, the earth has only withering forces of its own and is only refreshed for further existence by the fact that the formative forces of human bodies are imparted to it.
What it Means Today
The closest living argument to this lecture is the natural organic reduction movement. The designer Katrina Spade founded the Urban Death Project in 2014 and rebuilt it in 2017 as Recompose, a Seattle public-benefit corporation organised around composting human remains. Recompose co-sponsored a pilot at Washington State University in which Lynne Carpenter-Boggs, associate professor of sustainable and organic agriculture, ran six donated bodies through a five-month controlled recomposition and reported the process safe. On the strength of that work Governor Jay Inslee signed Senate Bill 5001 in May 2019, making Washington the first American state to license natural organic reduction, effective 1 May 2020. The case its advocates make is soil-first: a body is a nutrient the ground has been denied for a century of sealed caskets and furnaces.
Steiner would have recognised the direction and rejected the accounting. He is explicit in GA 191 that the gift is not chemistry. The form-forces reach the earth "no matter how", by cremation or by burial, because what crosses over is the structure a descending spirit-being impressed on the body, not the nitrogen and phosphorus in it. Composting makes the measurable half of the transaction visible, and leaves the half Steiner cared about exactly where it was.
Thalira synthesis: the compost engineer and the anthroposophist are answering one question, whether the dead still owe the living ground anything, and they have quietly divided the body between them, one taking its substance and the other its shape.
