Steiner's test for whether a concept is truly spiritual: not the warmth it stirs, but whether it can reach down into the account book.
Concepts That Reach the Account Book in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's test for whether an idea is genuinely spiritual. He set it out in the third lecture of Social Understanding from a Spiritual-Scientific Perspective (GA 191), given at Dornach on 5 October 1919, the year he published his threefold social writings. The measure is not the warmth a concept produces in the heart, it is the depth of matter the concept can reach. Steiner observed that modern life runs two currents that never meet: a religious or confessional life on one side, so-called life-practice on the other. A merchant may be sincerely pious, and yet nothing in that confession pushes down into his Kontobücher, his account books. Concepts weak enough to stop at Sunday feeling are, by this test, not spiritual concepts at all. The application today is exact: an ethic that never becomes a line item has not finished being thought.
Concepts that reach the account book name the standard Steiner set for spiritual thinking in 1919: a concept proves its spirituality by penetrating to the deepest essence of matter, not by producing inward feeling. Where a warm Sunday conviction and a Monday ledger never touch, the concept has failed the test. Where the ledger changes, the concept was real.

Religious life is a current, so-called life practice is the second current. Because the concepts and ideas have become weak and cannot penetrate down into the practice of life, we cannot find such vivid, strong concepts that lead into social life today. For this, they need to be refreshed by spiritual science, so that the concepts become strong enough to penetrate not only as far as the concepts of a Sunday afternoon preacher, which evoke warm feelings in the heart, inward soul voluptuousness, but do not penetrate into the activity that finds expression in the account book. The concepts that are derived from the spiritual must penetrate further into practical life. Concepts are not spiritual if they do not penetrate through their inner power to the deepest essence of matter.
What it Means Today
The lineage that took this test literally is anthroposophical social finance. In 1974 Wilhelm Ernst Barkhoff, a lawyer in Bochum, founded the GLS Gemeinschaftsbank für Leihen und Schenken, the community bank for lending and giving, out of a circle already working with Steiner's 1919 social lectures. Its founding proposition was Steiner's proposition in banking form: a conviction that cannot appear in the ledger is not yet a conviction. GLS names on the asset side what the money is actually doing, farm by farm, school by school. Triodos Bank, founded at Zeist in the Netherlands in 1980 from the same anthroposophical study circles, publishes every business it lends to, so a depositor can read the account book as a moral document.

What a reader does with this is small and exact. Take a conviction currently held as feeling, then look for the line where it would appear as a number: a price, a wage, a supplier, a term of payment. If no such line exists, the concept is still a Sunday concept, and GA 191 says spiritual science exists to strengthen it until that line can be written.
