Extra-Telluric Forces in Anthroposophy is the name Rudolf Steiner gives to the formative powers that reach the earth from outside it, in contrast to the telluric forces bound to the planet itself. In Spiritual Science and Medicine (GA 312), the first course for physicians, held at Dornach from 21 March to 9 April 1920, Steiner describes concentric spheres beyond the atmosphere: a warmth mantle, a light-generating zone, a chemical sphere, and farthest out the source of life itself. Each outer zone mirrors an earthly element in reverse, and each has a counterpart inside the human organism: the kidney system answers to the air sphere, the liver to the chemical sphere, the inner formative work of the lungs to the solid earth. Anthroposophic physicians read organ processes through this map, and Steiner names light itself as a product of these zones rather than of the sun, a claim he defends at length in the lecture of 31 March 1920.
For Steiner, extra-telluric forces are the reason light, chemical action and life cannot be explained from earthly matter alone. GA 312 argues that these powers arise in zones beyond the atmosphere and work downward into plant, animal and human life, while the human being carries interior organs, kidney, liver and lung, that hold small reserved portions of the same cosmic activity within the body.

He has within him something of the celestial sphere that contains the source of chemical action. And this function is highly localised in us, in the liver. I ask you to study the remarkable scope of the functional activity of the liver. On the one hand, it exercises what I might call a form of suction, determining the composition of the blood; and on the other hand, by means of the secretion of the gall, it regulates the process leading to blood formation. Consider these manifold activities; and you will have to recognise something which, if carefully studied, leads to a proper chemical science. For the external chemistry of outer science is not to be found on earth; it is a reflection only of the extra human “chemical sphere” above. But there is a means of studying this extra-telluric sphere in all the wonderful workings of the human liver.
What it Means Today
In GA 312 the liver is the organ through which the chemical sphere beyond the atmosphere works into the body, and the kidney system carries the imprint of the air sphere. A century later, chronobiology arrived at a structurally similar reversal from the laboratory side. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young for isolating the molecular clockwork, built around the period gene, through which organisms keep time with the day-night cycle. The liver proved to be a timekeeper in its own right: in 2000, Francesca Damiola and colleagues in Ueli Schibler's laboratory at the University of Geneva showed that the liver's circadian oscillators can uncouple from the brain's central clock and follow their own entrainment, and the liver remains among the most strongly clock-regulated organs physiologists have measured.
None of this confirms Steiner's spheres; chronobiology attributes the rhythms to evolved gene networks, not to descending cosmic forces. The convergence lies elsewhere, in the direction of explanation. Thalira synthesis: GA 312 and the Geneva liver experiments share one reversal, the organ is not a passive chemical vat inside the body but a rhythmic instrument keeping time with something beyond it. That is why anthroposophic physicians, from Ita Wegman's clinic at Arlesheim in 1921 onward, have taken the extra-telluric map as clinical method: it tells the doctor to ask when and from where a process works, not only which substance is present.
