Steiner's name for the hydrogen spread through cosmic space: seen rightly, it is phosphorus, light-borne fire that kindles new life wherever decay and fermentation set in.

World Phosphorus in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's name for hydrogen as it is spread through the whole circumference of the cosmos, which he identifies with phosphorus, the light-bearing fire substance. Steiner introduced the term (German: Weltenphosphor) in Dornach on 20 October 1923, in the workmen's lecture on the essence of hydrogen collected in How Spirit Works in Nature (GA 351). Chemistry, he grants, treats hydrogen and phosphorus as different elements, but only because it cannot yet convert one into the other; seen cosmically, the whole world circumference is filled with small fires. Where hydrogen develops in darkness, as in marsh gas or mine gas, it paralyzes and kills; where it develops in light, it is World Phosphorus, kindling new life out of everything that decays and ferments. In its interplay with the soda of the earth, Steiner says, it renews life on every scale, from cosmic space to the human seed and the nerves of the brain.

World Phosphorus is what the hydrogen filling cosmic space becomes when Steiner follows it past the limits of laboratory chemistry. Answering a workman's question about hydrogen, he described a universe ringed with small fires: the same substance that kills as marsh gas in darkness kindles life wherever it meets light, and its meeting with earthly soda keeps the world from dying into dust.

But when hydrogen develops in the light, as it is spread throughout the world in the light, it is the invigorating element; it is there that it produces new life from the decomposing and the fermenting. For hydrogen, as it is everywhere, is basically the same as what we have in our matches when we light them: phosphorus. Certainly, in chemistry, hydrogen is a completely different substance from phosphorus; but only because chemistry cannot go so far as to convert phosphorus into hydrogen! But if chemistry could go further than it is today, it would be able to convert phosphorus into hydrogen. So that we can say: What then is hydrogen, which is spread all over the world? The hydrogen that is spread throughout the world is the world phosphorus. Wherever we look, everywhere, everywhere there is phosphorus.

Modern astrochemistry has taken up its own version of the question the workman put to Steiner: what fills cosmic space, and what does it have to do with life? In January 2020, a team led by Victor Rivilla published a study in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society that traced phosphorus across the galaxy for the first time. Using the ALMA observatory in Chile, they watched phosphorus monoxide forming in the star-forming region AFGL 5142, along cavity walls lit by newborn stars; using the ROSINA instrument on ESA's Rosetta probe, with Kathrin Altwegg of the University of Bern among the authors, they found the same phosphorus-bearing chemistry in comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Their conclusion: the phosphorus in our DNA and in ATP, the molecule every living cell burns for energy, was forged around young stars and ferried to the early Earth. The element's name preserves the older intuition, since phosphoros is Greek for light-bearer. Steiner's identification of cosmic hydrogen with phosphorus is not chemistry, and he says so himself in the same lecture; he is describing a function, the light-borne kindling of life out of decay, not a laboratory substance.
