In Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy, the fourth earthly epoch, an ancient continent and civilisation that ended in a Great Flood, peopled by humans whose etheric body still organised them from outside.
Atlantis is the fourth earthly epoch in Rudolf Steiner's evolutionary anthropology, a long civilisation that lay between today's Europe and America and was drowned by the Atlantean catastrophe roughly ten thousand years before our era. Steiner researched it through the Akashic Records, not Plato's dialogues, and described Atlantean humanity as etheric-body-dominant, picture-memoried, breathing a watery, misty atmosphere, slowly individuating toward our present I-organised condition.
In Steiner's Own Words
Our Atlantean ancestors differed more from the men of to-day than may be imagined by anyone who is wholly limited to the world of sense for his knowledge. Logical reasoning, the calculatory combinations upon which all that is produced at the present day is based, were entirely wanting in the early Atlanteans, but in place of these they possessed a highly-developed memory. This memory was one of their most prominent mental faculties. The man of the present day has the advantage over the Atlantean of possessing a logical understanding and an aptitude for combination; but on the other hand his memory power has waned. We now think in ideas, the Atlantean thought in pictures.
What it Means Today
Modern readers meet Atlantis first through Plato. The Timaeus and Critias hand down a Greek priestly memory of an island civilisation drowned beyond the pillars of Heracles, and that priestly memory is exactly what Steiner says it is: a faint Greco-Latin trace pointing back at something far older. The pseudo-archaeology that built atop Plato (lost-city expeditions, Edgar Cayce readings, popular novels) belongs to a different conversation. Steiner is doing something else entirely. He is reading the fourth earthly epoch out of the Akashic Records as a stage in the development of the human soul, when the etheric body still organised the physical body partly from outside, when the air itself was thick with water, and when the I-organisation had not yet fully drawn into the individual.
The practical implication is that Atlantean faculties have not vanished, they have receded. The picture-memory Steiner describes still surfaces in dream, in hypnagogic states, in the felt sense a healer reads off a patient before the case history begins. The "life-force" Atlantean technology used (germinal force drawn directly from seed) is the same etheric formative current that biodynamic agriculture, since Koberwitz in 1924, has tried to learn from again. What modernity gained in logical sharpness, it lost in the watery, dreamlike participation that the Atlantean body still rested inside. Reading Atlantis with Steiner is less an exercise in lost-continent speculation and more a recovery of how the present clear waking consciousness was paid for. The migration from dissolving Atlantis into the post-Atlantean cultural arc was led by the great Sun Initiate Manu, who founded the Gobi-desert oracle from which the Holy Rishis descended.
