Overview of Minor Lines

The major lines (heart, head, life, fate, Sun) form the foundation of any palm reading. The minor lines add nuance, specificity, and detail. Not every hand has every minor line. Many hands show only one or two, and some show none. The Intuition Line

The intuition line (line of Luna) is a curved line on the percussion side of the palm, arcing from the Mount of Luna toward the Mount of Mercury. It is relatively rare.

When present: Strong intuitive or psychic sensitivity. The person may experience reliable gut feelings, prescient dreams, the ability to read people's emotional states without verbal cues, and a sense of "knowing" that operates independently of rational analysis. In the Indian tradition, this line is associated with the capacity for direct spiritual perception.

Travel Lines

Travel lines are short horizontal lines entering the palm from the percussion edge near the Mount of Luna. They traditionally indicate significant journeys or relocations.

Modern interpretation: Any experience that significantly expands the person's horizons: physical travel, cultural immersion, intellectual or spiritual experiences that take the person far from their familiar world. The depth of each line indicates the significance of the experience; the number indicates how many such horizon-expanding events the person has or will encounter.

The Girdle of Venus

The girdle of Venus is a semicircular line arcing above the heart line, running from between the Jupiter and Saturn fingers to between the Apollo and Mercury fingers. It acts as an intensifier of the heart line's emotional qualities.

Complete girdle (unbroken arc): Heightened emotional and sensual sensitivity. The person feels everything more intensely than most people. This can manifest as artistic talent, empathetic ability, sensual awareness, or emotional vulnerability. Benham described these individuals as having "nerves on the outside of the skin."

Broken or fragmented girdle: More common than a complete one. The sensitivity is present but intermittent or expressed inconsistently. The person may swing between periods of heightened feeling and periods of emotional numbness.

The Ring of Solomon

Benham noted that the Ring of Saturn "blocks the flow of Saturnian energy, turning discipline into imprisonment." It should be read in context with other features; a strong fate line and well-developed Saturn mount may partially compensate.

The Ring of Apollo

A line encircling the base of the Apollo (ring) finger. Rare.

What it indicates: Blocked creative expression, frustrated artistic talent, or difficulty achieving public recognition. The Apollonian energy of creativity and self-expression is contained rather than released. The person may have genuine talent that they cannot or do not express.

The Mars Line (Sister Life Line)

A fine line running parallel to the life line on the Mount of Venus side (between the life line and the thumb). Also called the sister life line or inner life line.

What it indicates: Extra vitality, resilience, and protection. Where it parallels a weak or broken section of the life line, it compensates for the deficiency, suggesting the person will recover from or be shielded during that vulnerable period.

In Hast Jyotish, the Mars line is one of the most auspicious features of the hand. It is associated with spiritual protection, ancestral support, and physical stamina that exceeds the body's apparent capacity.

The Via Lascivia

A short line running from the base of the Mount of Luna toward the Mount of Venus, cutting across the lower palm.

Traditional interpretation: Sensual excess, addiction potential, hedonistic tendencies. Cheiro associated it with "a craving for stimulation that may become self-destructive."

Modern interpretation: Heightened sensitivity to substances, foods, and physical stimulation. The person may have a strong reaction to alcohol, caffeine, medications, or environmental chemicals. This can manifest as allergies, chemical sensitivities, or an unusually strong response to any ingested substance. The via Lascivia in modern palmistry is read as a sensitivity marker rather than a moral judgement.

The Mystic Cross

A cross formation found in the centre of the palm, between the heart line and head line, in the area called the Quadrangle. The cross should be freestanding, not formed by the intersection of other lines.

The mystic cross should be clearly defined and freestanding. Many apparent mystic crosses are actually formed by the intersection of the fate line with other minor lines; these do not carry the same significance.

The Teacher's Square

A small square formation on the Mount of Jupiter (beneath the index finger).

What it indicates: Natural teaching ability, the capacity to communicate complex ideas clearly and accessibly, and a genuine concern for others' learning and development. People with the teacher's square often gravitate toward education, training, mentoring, or any role where they help others understand difficult material.

The Rascettes (Bracelet Lines)

The rascettes are the horizontal lines at the wrist, where the hand meets the forearm. Most people have two to three rascettes.

Traditional interpretation: Each well-defined rascette indicates approximately 25-30 years of life (an old-school method that modern palmists generally do not use). More usefully, the quality of the rascettes indicates overall constitutional strength: deep, clear rascettes suggest a strong constitution, while chained or poorly defined rascettes suggest constitutional weakness.
