Human Design Chart Explained: How to Read Your BodyGraph

What Is the BodyGraph?

The BodyGraph is the central visual tool of the Human Design system. It is a schematic diagram of the human energy field, showing 9 geometric shapes (centres) connected by 36 lines (channels), with 64 numbered points (gates) distributed across those channels and centres. When calculated for a specific individual using their birth data, the BodyGraph reveals a unique pattern of defined and undefined elements that constitutes their energetic design.

Ra Uru Hu received the Human Design system in January 1987, and the BodyGraph is his synthesis of four ancient knowledge systems:

• The I Ching provides the 64 gates (hexagrams) and the 6 lines within each gate.
• The Kabbalistic Tree of Life provides the structural layout of the centres and the pathways (channels) between them. The BodyGraph's nine centres correspond to the Sephiroth, adapted from the original Hermetic and Kabbalistic framework.
• The Hindu-Brahmin chakra system provides the original energy centre concept, which Ra updated from seven centres to nine for the current era.
• Western astrology provides the planetary activation mechanism: the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at specific moments determine which gates are activated in your chart.

What You Need to Generate Your Chart

To calculate your BodyGraph, you need three pieces of information:

1. Birth date: Day, month, and year.
2. Birth time: As precise as possible, ideally to the minute. Even a few minutes of difference can change which gate a planet activates, potentially altering your profile or authority.
3. Birth location: City and country. This is needed for the astrological calculation that determines planetary positions relative to the local horizon.

The Correct Reading Order

Ra Uru Hu was specific about the order in which chart elements should be studied. The order moves from the most immediately practical to the most contemplative:

1. Type: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector. This tells you your aura mechanics and the fundamental way your energy operates.
2. Strategy: Wait to respond, wait for invitation, inform, or wait a lunar cycle. This is the practical decision-making framework that produces the most immediate results.
3. Authority: Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental/Environmental, or Lunar. This tells you which body intelligence to consult for decisions.
4. Profile: Your two-number life role (1/3, 4/6, etc.), which describes the costume you wear and the themes that shape your interactions.
5. Defined centres, channels, and gates: The specific energies that are consistent in your design.
6. Open centres: Where you absorb others' energy and where your deepest conditioning (and potential wisdom) resides.
7. Incarnation cross: Your life purpose, which typically becomes fully expressed after the Chiron return (around age 50).

Defined vs Undefined: The Foundation

The most fundamental distinction in the BodyGraph is between defined and undefined elements.

Defined (coloured) centres have at least one complete channel running through them. They produce consistent, reliable energy that you can count on. A defined Solar Plexus, for example, means you have a consistent emotional wave. A defined Sacral means you have consistent life force energy. Defined centres are "who you are" in a stable, fixed sense.

Undefined (white) centres have no complete channel. They do not produce their own energy. Instead, they take in and amplify the energy of other people's defined centres. If your Solar Plexus is undefined, you will feel the emotions of people around you, often more intensely than they feel them themselves. Undefined centres are where you are most conditioned by your environment, taking on others' energy as if it were your own.

Open centres (a further distinction) have no gate activations at all, making them even more receptive. The terms "undefined" and "open" are sometimes used interchangeably in casual discussion, but technically an undefined centre may have hanging gate activations while an open centre has none.

The wisdom potential of open centres is significant. Because you experience the energy of that centre in many different ways (through many different people's definitions), you develop a depth of understanding that people with that centre defined may not have. The undefined Solar Plexus person, over a lifetime, learns more about the full spectrum of human emotion than the defined Solar Plexus person, who experiences only their own consistent wave.

Conscious and Unconscious Activations

Your BodyGraph is calculated from two sets of planetary positions:

Personality (Conscious) calculation: The positions of the Sun, Earth, Moon, North Node, South Node, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto at the exact moment of your birth. These activations appear in black on the chart (right column). They represent qualities you identify with, can access consciously, and recognise as "you."

Design (Unconscious) calculation: The positions of the same 13 celestial bodies at approximately 88 degrees of the Sun before your birth (roughly 3 months earlier). These activations appear in red on the chart (left column). They represent qualities that operate automatically and unconsciously. Others may see these qualities in you before you recognise them in yourself.

When a conscious (black) and unconscious (red) activation combine to complete a channel, the channel appears as striped (black and red), indicating a blend of conscious and unconscious energy. Channels defined entirely in black are consciously accessible. Channels defined entirely in red operate below conscious awareness.

The 9 Centres Explained

The 36 Channels

Channels are the lines connecting two centres in the BodyGraph. Each channel has two gates, one at each end. When both gates of a channel are activated in your chart (by any combination of conscious and unconscious planetary activations), the channel is defined, and both connected centres become defined.

A defined channel creates a consistent energy flow between the two centres it connects. This flow has a specific theme derived from the I Ching hexagrams of the two component gates. For example, the Channel of Charisma (Gates 20-34) connects the Sacral to the Throat and carries the theme of busy, active, in-the-now responsiveness.

The 36 channels are grouped into three circuits:

• Individual Circuit: Channels that carry unique, mutating, creative energy. These channels produce innovation and personal truth that may not be understood by the collective.
• Tribal Circuit: Channels that carry energy related to family, community, resources, and agreements. These channels produce loyalty, material security, and intimate bonds.
• Collective Circuit: Channels that carry energy related to sharing knowledge and experience with the wider world. This divides into the Logical sub-circuit (patterns, proof, correction) and the Abstract sub-circuit (experience, storytelling, reflection).

The 64 Gates and the I Ching

Each of the 64 gates in the BodyGraph corresponds to one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching (the ancient Chinese Book of Changes). This is not a loose analogy; the correspondence is direct and specific. Gate 1 is Hexagram 1 (The Creative). Gate 2 is Hexagram 2 (The Receptive). Gate 64 is Hexagram 64 (Before Completion).

Each gate has 6 lines, corresponding to the 6 lines of the I Ching hexagram. Your specific line is determined by the exact degree of the planet activating that gate. The line adds nuance to the gate's theme: Line 1 is investigative (foundation-building), Line 2 is hermit-like (natural talent), Line 3 is experimental (trial and error), Line 4 is social (networking and influence), Line 5 is universalising (projection and heresy), and Line 6 is transcendent (role model after maturity).

A hanging gate (only one gate of a channel pair activated) carries the thematic energy of that gate but does not create a full channel or define the centres at either end. Hanging gates create an electromagnetic attraction to people who have the opposite gate, completing the channel when the two people are in proximity. This is one of the primary mechanics behind Human Design's approach to relationship compatibility.

Type and Strategy

Your type is determined by the overall pattern of defined centres in your chart:

• Generator: Defined Sacral, no motor-to-Throat. Strategy: wait to respond.
• Manifesting Generator: Defined Sacral plus motor-to-Throat. Strategy: respond, visualise, inform.
• Projector: No defined Sacral, no motor-to-Throat. Strategy: wait for recognition and invitation.
• Manifestor: No defined Sacral, motor-to-Throat. Strategy: inform before acting.
• Reflector: No defined centres at all. Strategy: wait a lunar cycle.

Authority

Authority tells you which body intelligence to trust for decisions. It is determined by which centres are defined in your chart, following a strict hierarchy: Solar Plexus (Emotional) always takes precedence if defined, followed by Sacral, Spleen, Ego/Heart, G Centre (Self-Projected), no inner authority (Mental/Environmental for Projectors), and Lunar (for Reflectors). Incarnation Cross: Your Life Purpose

The incarnation cross is determined by the four gate activations of your conscious and unconscious Sun and Earth. The Sun and Earth are always in opposite gates (180 degrees apart), so the cross is formed by two pairs of opposing gates: one pair from the conscious calculation, one from the unconscious.

There are 192 possible incarnation crosses in Human Design, and the cross describes the overarching life purpose or theme that your design is here to express. Ra Uru Hu noted that the incarnation cross becomes fully expressed after the Chiron return (around age 50), when the individual has had enough life experience for the cross's purpose to emerge naturally from living according to type, strategy, and authority.

The incarnation cross is the deepest layer of chart interpretation and should be the last thing you study, not the first. Attempting to "live your purpose" without first establishing correct type, strategy, and authority is like trying to play a concerto without first learning the instrument.

Planetary Activations and the Mandala

The outer ring of the complete Human Design chart (the Mandala) shows the 64 gates arranged around the zodiac wheel, with planetary symbols indicating where each planet was positioned at the two calculation moments. Each planet contributes a specific thematic quality:

• Sun: Core identity (70% of your neutrino programming)
• Earth: Grounding and physical body
• Moon: Driving force and emotional pattern
• North Node: Future direction and environment
• South Node: Past patterns and inherited themes
• Mercury: Communication style
• Venus: Values, relationships, and aesthetics
• Mars: Immaturity and drive
• Jupiter: Law and protection
• Saturn: Discipline and life lessons
• Uranus: Unusualness and chaos
• Neptune: Illusion and spirituality
• Pluto: Truth and transformation

The Sun is the most significant planet, contributing approximately 70% of the neutrino stream that programs your chart. Your conscious Sun gate is the single most impactful activation in your entire design.
