The Threefold Call from the Spirit World in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's account of three decisive summons addressed to humanity across the seven post-Atlantean cultural epochs, given in a lecture at Heidenheim on 30 November 1911 and printed in The Mission of the New Spirit Revelation (GA 127). The first call thundered from Mount Sinai as the commandments of Jehovah. The second sounded in the wilderness through John the Baptist. The third is proclaimed now, from the spiritual worlds, as the new revelation carried by spiritual science. Steiner then folds the same sequence into the single biography: conception mirrors Sinai, the years of learning to speak mirror the Baptist, and the later waking of thought that understands speech mirrors the third call. There are three decisive points in our seven cultural epochs for the further development of humanity. These are: The first call that went out to humanity with a thundering voice from Mount Sinai, as the commandments of Jehovah! The second call in the wilderness by John the Baptist, when the Baptist said to those who wanted to hear him: “Change your minds, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand”! The third call, my dear friends, is that which is proclaimed from the spiritual worlds as a new revelation through spiritual science or theosophy! The child at conception, when the soul descends from spiritual spheres into this world of physical laws, is a memory and a symbol of the moment of the first thunderclap from Sinai in the laws.
What it Means Today
In the lecture's second half Steiner does something a historian of religion would not: he looks for the three world-calls inside a single childhood. Conception answers Sinai. The years when a child speaks without yet thinking about speech answer the voice in the wilderness. The waking of thought that understands the speech it already owns answers the third call. Karl König, the Viennese physician who founded the Camphill movement near Aberdeen in 1940, built his curative-education work on exactly that reading. His book The First Three Years of the Child, published in German in 1957, treats uprightness, speech, and thought as three distinct deeds rather than one gradual maturation, each with its own gesture and its own moment. Camphill and Waldorf kindergarten practice still rests on that non-negotiable order: you do not teach a child to think before speech has settled, and you do not hurry speech before the child stands.
