Three times before any earthly birth, the Christ permeated the Nathan Jesus-soul in spiritual worlds, healing the human senses, vital organs, and soul-life against Lucifer and Ahriman.
The Three Pre-Earthly Deeds of Christ in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's account, given most fully in the lectures of GA 149 (1913, Christ and the Spiritual World), of three occasions when the Christ Being permeated the Nathan Jesus-soul in the spiritual worlds, long before any earthly incarnation. Each deed repaired one region of human nature that Lucifer and Ahriman had endangered: the senses in the Lemurian age, the vital organs of breathing and circulation in the Atlantean age, and the soul-powers of thinking, feeling, and willing in early post-Atlantean times. Steiner reads Apollo overcoming the Python at Delphi, and St. George vanquishing the dragon, as folk-memories of the third deed. These super-sensible acts prepared the body and soul that the Christ would later enter at the Mystery of Golgotha. The bearer of the deeds, the Nathan soul, corresponds to the crown.
The Three Pre-Earthly Deeds of Christ are three permeations of the Nathan Jesus-soul by the Christ in the spiritual worlds, before the Mystery of Golgotha. In the Lemurian age the first deed reordered the human senses; in the Atlantean age the second steadied the vital organs; in early post-Atlantean times the third harmonised thinking, feeling, and willing, holding off the powers of Lucifer and Ahriman.
In Steiner's Own Words
St. George and the Dragon reflect that celestial event when the Christ ensouled the Jesus-Being and enabled him to drive the Dragon out of the soul-nature of man. This was a significant deed, made possible only with the help of Christ in the Being of Jesus, at that time an angelic Being. For this angelic Being had actually to connect himself with the Dragon-nature, to take on as it were the form of the Dragon in order to hold off the Dragon from the soul of man. He had to work from within the Dragon, so that the Dragon was ennobled and brought out of chaos into a kind of harmony.
What it Means Today
The figure most likely to carry this teaching into present study is the Russian-born anthroposophist Sergei O. Prokofieff (1954 to 2014), a member of the Executive Council at the Goetheanum in Dornach. In his essay "The Task of the Nathan Soul for Humanity," collected in the volume Communities for Tomorrow (Temple Lodge Publishing, 2011), Prokofieff traces the being Steiner names the Nathan soul across exactly the three pre-earthly events described in GA 149, then onward through the Mystery of Golgotha and into the working of the Holy Spirit at Whitsun. His reading keeps the deeds from collapsing into pious metaphor: each one is a real intervention in the cosmic forces that shape the human sense system, the breathing and circulation, and the inner balance of thought, feeling, and will.
What makes the teaching usable, rather than merely historical, is its anatomy. Steiner ties the first deed to the senses, the second to the rhythmic organs, the third to the soul-life, and a contemplative reader can take the three as a map of where human nature is perpetually defended. Thalira synthesis: the three pre-earthly deeds describe a healing that runs downward through the bodily members before the Christ enters a single human life, so the Mystery of Golgotha reads less as a sudden arrival than as the last of four graded permeations. The Apollo who slays the Python and the George who unhorses the dragon are then not borrowed symbols but memories of a deed performed in the spiritual world on behalf of every human soul.
