Steiner's reading of the holy city of Revelation 21 as the future Jupiter embodiment of earth, the spiritualized planet humanity is even now preparing.
The New Jerusalem in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's name for the future Jupiter embodiment of the earth, the holy city John sees descending from heaven once the present planet has been wholly spiritualized. In the 1908 Nuremberg cycle The Apocalypse of John (GA 104), Steiner reads Revelation 21 not as a heavenly reward laid over the old world but as the next planetary incarnation that humanity itself prepares. Souls who have permeated their astral body with the Christ-impulse draw the blueprint of this coming earth-condition while still living here; the city's cube-form expresses the lawful, crystalline regularity of a world that has become entirely transparent to spirit. John sees a city that needs no temple, because the whole of it has become temple, and whose gates are never shut. The New Jerusalem is therefore the goal of earthly evolution, the new heaven and new earth named Jupiter.
In Steiner's Own Words
The condition of humanity will then be such that those who have reached the goal of evolution will have entirely permeated their astral body with Christ. They will be ready to pass over to Jupiter. Upon our earth they have made the plan of the Jupiter evolution. This is the plan which is called the New Jerusalem. They live in a new heaven and a new earth, that is, Jupiter. This new Jupiter will be accompanied by a satellite, composed of those who are excluded from the life in the spiritual, who have experienced the second death and are, therefore, unable to attain the Jupiter consciousness.
What it Means Today
Read most literally, the descending city looks like an afterlife: a perfected world handed down to the saved while the earth is left behind. Steiner's 1908 reading turns that picture inside out. The New Jerusalem is the earth, carried forward into its next planetary condition, the embodiment he calls Future Jupiter. It is not a place souls go but a world they grow, the spiritualized successor of the mineral planet now under our feet. The descent from heaven names the moment when what the astral body has gathered finally works down into the dense earth-substance itself, until matter no longer resists the spirit but obeys it.
This is the lens the anthroposophical Apocalypse tradition has worked with since the Nuremberg cycle, and it carries a quiet demand. If Jupiter is built from what humanity makes of itself now, then the cube John sees is the sum of human moral and spiritual labour, set into lawful form. Steiner places one shadow beside the city: the satellite of souls who, having met the second death, cannot enter the new consciousness and circle the new world from outside. The two pictures belong together. The holy city is not a gift but an outcome, the crystalline harvest of an earth that learned to become transparent to the Christ-impulse before its substance fell away.
