Steiner's principle that scientific concepts must transform like living organisms, not transfer unchanged, when cognition moves from lifeless nature into the realms of life, soul, and spirit.

The Metamorphosis of Concepts in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's answer to the question of how natural science can be legitimately extended beyond lifeless nature. In the Berlin university course published as The Impulse for Renewal in Culture and Science (GA 81, 1922), Steiner argues that when cognition passes from the mineral world to the living, the ensouled, and the spiritual, its concepts must not be carried over unchanged by logical transfer. They must themselves metamorphose, taking on new forms the way a plant transforms leaf into blossom, while one thing remains constant across every field: the inner stance of scientific certainty that gives knowledge its monistic character. The bearer of this metamorphosis is thinking itself, schooled on Goethe's study of living form, which Steiner edited in the 1880s. Practitioners of whole-organism biology apply the same principle today when they let the living object reshape the researcher's concepts.

The Metamorphosis of Concepts names the discipline Steiner set at the door of every science of life: do not carry the finished concepts of physics and chemistry unchanged into biology, psychology, or spiritual research. Let them grow. In the lecture of 6 March 1922 in Berlin he told a university audience that thoughts, like organisms, become unrecognizable when they enter a new realm, and that this is their health, not their failure.

However, this stands in complete contrast to what anthroposophy must understand by such an extension of ideas. It must carry out the concept of a certain independent growth, a metamorphosis of the idea, when moving from one area of world phenomena to another, so that one cannot simply “logically transfer” what one has learned from inanimate natural phenomena to animate natural phenomena. Just as, comparatively speaking, things themselves change greatly in the living world when they grow, when they undergo metamorphoses, and how they are then often unrecognizable in the form they have taken on, so too must thoughts take on different forms when they enter another realm. But what remains the same across all fields and what then gives the entire scientific worldview a monistic character is the way in which one relates internally to what can be called “scientific certainty,” which provides the basis for scientific conviction.

The clearest modern case study of concept metamorphosis comes from maize genetics. In 1983 the philosopher of science Evelyn Fox Keller published A Feeling for the Organism, her account of the cytogeneticist Barbara McClintock, who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine that same year for discovering mobile genetic elements. Keller documents how McClintock refused to treat her maize plants as interchangeable instances of a general mechanism. She knew each plant in the field individually, followed its development season by season, and let the organism reorganize her categories until the data forced a concept, the transposable element, that the mechanistic genetics of the 1940s could not have formulated. Her colleagues found the claim unintelligible for nearly three decades precisely because they were applying concepts finished elsewhere, exactly the habit Steiner had described in Berlin in 1922.

McClintock called her method developing a feeling for the organism; Steiner called the same requirement the self-metamorphosis of thinking. Neither asked science to give up rigor. Both located rigor in the willingness of cognition to be changed by what it studies. Thalira synthesis: the metamorphosis of concepts is the hinge on which the door between the sciences of matter and the sciences of life turns, since a science of the living begins the moment the knower accepts the same law of transformation that governs the known. A reader can practice this directly: take one concept that works, ask where its validity ends, and watch what it must become on the far side of that border.
