The Discord of Earthly Speech in Anthroposophy is the shrill dissonance that the last remnant of the human speech faculty introduces into the Music of the Spheres when the soul enters the Sun existence between death and a new birth. Rudolf Steiner described it at The Hague on 17 November 1923, in the lecture cycle published as Supersensible Man (GA 231). By that stage of the journey the spirit-form has fallen away, yet the soul still carries speech in memory, and because modern languages have degenerated from a primal tongue, in which the vowel expressed feeling and the consonant expressed form, into mere convention, this remnant sounds as discord against the cosmic harmonies. Certain higher Spiritual Beings read in the discord how far earthly existence has declined, and draw from it the impulses for its ascent. But the faculty of soul that enabled us to speak, to make our thought articulate in words, follows us, and being present with us in memory brings a kind of discord into the Music of the Spheres. Yes, discord is introduced into the Music of the Spheres, by reason of the fact that man carries right up into Sun existence the remnants of his faculty of speech. And this discordant element that is brought by man into the Sun existence becomes the basis for the work of certain higher Spirits whose task it is to help forward Earth existence from the Cosmos. For it is when they see what comes to expression in human speech and language as it is to-day, that they take knowledge of how things have degenerated on the Earth and grown corrupt.

Steiner spoke these words in 1923, seven years after the posthumous publication of Ferdinand de Saussure's Course in General Linguistics (1916), the book that taught modern linguistics to treat the bond between sound and meaning as arbitrary convention. The Discord of Earthly Speech is Steiner's cosmological verdict on that doctrine: for him, convention in language is not a neutral fact but a fall, and the fall is audible from the Sun. Experimental psychology has since recovered a fragment of the older view. Wolfgang Köhler reported in Gestalt Psychology (1929) that people overwhelmingly match the invented word takete to a spiky drawing and its soft counterpart to a rounded one.
