Steiner's name for the evolutionary event in which the once-mobile Moon organs of the head were fixed under the skull, and their enforced sleep made earthly thinking possible.

The Brain That Learned to Sleep in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's evolutionary account of why the head is the least awake part of the human being, given in the ninth lecture of The Destiny of Individuals and of Nations (GA 157, Berlin, 9 March 1915). During the Old Moon stage of cosmic evolution there was no solid cranium, and the organs now folded together as the brain still moved like hands; precisely because those organs were awake, Moon humanity could not think. On Earth they were brought to rest and held fast by the skull, so the ego and astral body of the head remain outside it and are mirrored by it. Thinking is this reflection from a sleeping organ. Steiner adds that on Jupiter the hands will grow still in the same way. The neuroscientist Rodolfo Llinás reached a kindred motor theory of thought in 2001.

The Brain That Learned to Sleep names a reversal at the heart of Steiner's anthropology: the organ we credit with our sharpest waking is in truth our sleepiest. The cranial organs once moved freely on the Old Moon, and were awake, and therefore could not think. Held fast by the earthly skull, they now sleep, reflect the soul's activity like a mirror, and so make thought possible.

You see, it is the same with the brain. When we were still living on the Old Moon we had organs up here [the cranium] that moved like hands. These organs have become fixed. On the Old Moon we did not yet have a solid cranium; the organs now folded up to form the brain were then able to move like hands. Because of this, men living on the Old Moon were not yet able to think the way men do on earth. A clairvoyant assessing thought activity clearly perceives that in a human being who is awake the sleeping organs in his brain do indeed move like wings, the way I have described that astral and ether hands would move if our physical hands could be immobilized.

In 2001 the Colombian-born neurophysiologist Rodolfo Llinás, chair of physiology and neuroscience at New York University School of Medicine, published I of the Vortex: From Neurons to Self (MIT Press). Its central claim: thinking is evolutionarily internalized movement. Brains exist, Llinás argued, only in creatures that move; a nervous system is a prediction machine for motion, and what we call thought is the premotor act carried on inwardly, uncoupled from the limbs. His favourite witness is the sea squirt, whose swimming larva carries a small brain and, once it cements itself to a rock, digests most of that brain away. No further movement, no further need of the mind's organ.

Steiner's ninth lecture makes the mirror-image claim from the other side. The brain is a bundle of arrested limbs: organs that gestured like hands on the Old Moon and were stilled beneath the earthly skull, their captive movement now reflected back as thinking. Where Llinás derives mind from motion internalized across Darwinian time, Steiner watches motion put to sleep across cosmic time, and names the sleep itself as the condition of thought. The Thalira synthesis: thinking is the dream a hand has when it can no longer move, which is why meditation, as Steiner describes it in this same lecture, must first hold the body still before the freed etheric hands of the brain can stir like wings.
