The fire-and-iron Kabiroi rite of Aegean Samothrace that Steiner read in GA 232 as a will-pole preparation for the Christ-Impulse.
Samothracian Mysteries in Anthroposophy are the late Greek mystery rite of the island of Samothrace, where pupils worked with the four Kabiroi (cosmic-elemental smith beings of fire and iron) under the guidance of a celebrating priest called the Father. Rudolf Steiner gave the canonical anthroposophic account in Mystery Centres, GA 232, lecture 12, on 21 December 1923 in Dornach. He treated the rite as a will-pole school: incense smoke caught the mantric breath of the Father, and the forms of three Kabiri (Mercury, Mars, Apollo) condensed in the rising vapour, letting the pupil feel the planetary will-stream forge courage into the human astral and limb-system. Modern application: anthroposophic medicine reads the Mars-iron stream that the Kabiroi guarded as the same forge-current still active in the human will, now under Michael's regency since 1879.
The Samothracian Mysteries were the fire-and-iron Kabiroi rite of the Aegean island of Samothrace, which Rudolf Steiner addressed in GA 232 (Dornach, December 1923) as a will-pole mystery prefiguring the Christ-Impulse. Four cosmic smith-beings, the Kabiroi, were felt in the breath-shaped incense smoke of the celebrating Father; the pupil received the planetary iron-stream into the solar plexus and limb-will.
In Steiner's Own Words
The important fact is that with these vessels in their whole symbolic form there was associated an act of consecration, an act of sacrifice. A kind of incense was put into them and lighted, and as the smoke streamed up, three words were uttered with mantric power into this smoke by the Father who was celebrating; and there appeared the forms of the three Kabiri. The human breath, as it was exhaled, took shape through the mantric word that was spoken, and communicated its form to the ascending, evaporating substance that had been incorporated in the symbolic jars. When in this way the pupil learned to read in the stream his own breath, to read what the stream of his breath wrote in the smoke, he learned at the same time to read what the mysterious planets said to him from out the wide Universe.
What it Means Today
Anthroposophic medicine reads the Samothracian iron-stream as a still-active forge-current in the human will. The lineage runs from Ita Wegman's 1921 clinic at Arlesheim through to today's Filderklinik in Filderstadt, where Ferrum preparations (meteoric-iron and plant-iron potencies) are used to address weak-will conditions, anaemia of the soul-life, and the inability to stand inside one's own decisions. The cosmological framing is direct: what the Kabiroi forged into the pupil in Samothrace by mantric word and incense smoke, anthroposophic physicians now address through the Mars-iron substance worked into the patient's biography. Steiner returned to the Mars-iron theme repeatedly in GA 224 (lectures of 1923), tying the Michael-time that began in 1879 to the same iron-stream that the Samothracian Father once intoned into the rising smoke.
The Thalira reading sits one layer deeper. The Samothracian rite was not a generic fire-cult. It was the last Greek school where the pupil could still touch the Gods with the outgoing breath, in Steiner's exact phrase, before that capacity withdrew from public consciousness and waited under the Michael regency for its individual rebirth in each human will. The Kabiroi did not vanish. They became, after the Mystery of Golgotha, the cosmic iron-stream that any modern human can meet in the moment of decisive moral action. Where the Hibernian Mysteries trained nature-clairvoyance and the Ephesus Mysteries trained the cosmic Word, Samothrace trained the will to take fire and stand. Sergei Prokofieff's research on the Kabiroi-stream traces the same current through to the Foundation Stone Meditation given at the 1923 Christmas Conference, four days after the lecture above.
