The third planetary condition in Steiner's evolutionary cosmology, where the astral body germ first joined the human being and the water element took form.
Old Moon (German alter Mond or Mond-Zustand) is the third of seven planetary conditions through which the Earth and humanity pass in Rudolf Steiner's cosmology. It follows Old Saturn and Old Sun, and precedes the present Earth condition. On Old Moon the watery element first condensed out of the previous gaseous state, and the astral body germ was added alongside the already-present physical and etheric germs.
In Steiner's Own Words
We now know that the next state is again a state of condensation. The third state of our world system is that of the old moon. Those who have studied the messages from the Akasha Chronicle know that the old moon was formed when the substance of the sun condensed further into the watery. The moon does not yet have solid earth, but it has fire, air and water. It has organized the watery element. The gas or the air has condensed to the watery element.
What it Means Today
Reading Steiner on Old Moon next to Goethe's morphological writings clarifies what kind of statement is being made. Goethe spent his last decades arguing that nature is not a finished mechanism but a sequence of transformations, and that each form carries the memory of its earlier states. Steiner extends this method past the plant and the animal to the cosmos itself. Old Moon is not a literal lunar body floating in physical space. It is a developmental phase, an earlier metamorphosis of the same world-being that now appears as Earth. The water element, the astral body germ, and the rank of the Angels (whom Steiner also calls Sons of Twilight) all arose together as facets of one condensation event.
For practitioners, this reframes the astral body. What we now experience as desire, image-life, and the sleeping body's wandering is not a recent layer added at birth. It is a planetary inheritance, formed in the watery medium of an earlier world. Goethean observation of dream-life, of the way sympathies and antipathies move through us like currents rather than like thoughts, recovers something of that medium. Old Moon is also where Steiner locates the human stage of the Angels, the rank that now stands one step above us. Their work in our astral life is the residue of that older arrangement. The water within and the water without share a single origin: the same condensation that gave the Earth its oceans gave us the inwardness that can dream, picture, desire, and feel. A spectral remnant of the Old Moon condition is what Steiner identified as the eighth sphere, the realm into which Lucifer and Ahriman seek to draw earthly substance. The legacy of the Old Moon is carried by the moon beings, the Spirits of Wisdom who endowed humanity with the etheric life-body.
