The Spirits of Wisdom: first rank of the second hierarchy, who articulate cosmic Wisdom into ethereal form and gave the human being its etheric body during Old Sun.
Kyriotetes in Anthroposophy are the Spirits of Wisdom (German: Geister der Weisheit, also Herrschaften), named in Rudolf Steiner's 1909 Düsseldorf cycle The Spiritual Hierarchies (GA 110) as the first rank of the second threefold hierarchy. They stand beneath the Thrones (Spirits of Will) and above the Dynamis (Spirits of Motion), and correspond to the Dominions of Dionysius the Areopagite (Greek: Κυριότητες; Pauline Letter to the Colossians 1:16). Their cosmic function, on Old Saturn, was to receive what the highest hierarchy brought down from universal space and to regulate it so that the interior of the forming world-body corresponded with the order outside. On the succeeding Old Sun stage, having advanced from a human-rank developmental position, the Kyriotetes poured out the substance of their own etheric being as sacrifice. From that gift the human etheric body, the patterning-Wisdom of all life-form, was kindled.
The Kyriotetes are the Dominions of Dionysian angelology, read by Steiner as the Spirits whose substance is articulate cosmic Wisdom. Where the Thrones offer Will-substance and the Dynamis carry that substance into motion, the Kyriotetes hold the inward directing intelligence: the harmonising of what comes from outside the world-body with what must take form inside it. Their sacrifice on Old Sun became the etheric body of the human being.
In Steiner's Own Words
What then is the task of the first Beings of the second threefold Hierarchy? The Spirits of Wisdom or Dominions, or Kyriotetes take that which the Thrones or Spirits of Will bring down out of Universal space, and regulate it so that a harmonious co-relation can come about between the single globe which is originating, between Saturn and the whole Universe. In the interior of Saturn everything has to be so regulated that it corresponds with what is outside. What the Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones, bring down to Saturn from the hand of God, must be so appointed that within Saturn these commands can be carried out, and these impulses become realities.
What it Means Today
Anthroposophic medicine, the discipline Ita Wegman opened with Steiner at the Clinical-Therapeutic Institute in Arlesheim in 1921 and that continues today at the Klinik Arlesheim and the Filderklinik in Filderstadt, reads the Kyriotetes' Wisdom-stream as the patterning intelligence of the etheric body. The Kyriotetes do not merely move life; they shape it according to wisdom-form. When Friedemann Schad and his Filderklinik colleagues speak of the etheric organisation as the formative-Wisdom field that an oncological mistletoe preparation addresses, the lineage runs directly back to GA 110 Lecture IV. The etheric body is not raw vitality. It is articulated Wisdom that builds organs the way a sentence builds meaning, and the rank of beings whose sacrifice produced that substance is the Kyriotetes.
Goethean phenomenology gives this a second access. When a careful observer reads a plant the way Goethe read the Urpflanze, the metamorphosis that carries cotyledon into foliage leaf into petal is not random pliancy; it is Wisdom expressing itself as form. Steiner's contribution was to name the rank of beings whose articulate intelligence underwrites that metamorphic Wisdom. The Word-pole of the second triad, the throat-chakra correspondence in the human anthropology, sounds because the Kyriotetes first sounded the formative Word into the etheric of the cosmos. Reading a plant, or feeling the wisdom of one's own life-body in eurythmy or hygienic eurythmy, is meeting that articulate stream where it is still working.
