Gold, Health and Prolonged Life in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's formula for what happens when the three great ideas of Western philosophy are pulled down into matter and held as private property. Kant named the three ideas God, freedom and immortality; Goethe, Steiner says, named them correctly as God, virtue and immortality. In the lecture of 25 November 1917 at Dornach, published in Individual Spirit Beings and Their Influence on the Soul-Life of Man (GA 178), Steiner describes group-egotistic brotherhoods in the West that keep the old traditional knowledge alive but translate each abstraction into a concrete possession. God becomes gold, the solar substance in the earth's crust. Virtue becomes health, sought through cosmic constellations and metals such as copper and arsenic. Immortality becomes the lengthening of life inside the lodge. The occult means are then withheld, and withholding, not the knowledge itself, is what converts the triad into an instrument of power.
Gold, health and prolonged life is the shorthand Steiner gave in November 1917 for a real translation practice inside certain Western occult schools. What theology states abstractly, the initiate states as a holding: metal, body, duration. Steiner did not dismiss the three concrete aims. He warned that pursuing them for one group, by keeping the method secret, turns spiritual knowledge into a lever of economic control.

However, just as gold, health and the prolongation of life are put in the place of God, virtue and immortality, so from the same quarter efforts will be made to work not with the morning and evening processes, but with others. Last week I told you how an attempt will be made to set aside the impulse of the Mystery of Golgotha, while for the West another impulse, a sort of Anti-Christ is introduced; and from the East an attempt will be made to paralyse the twentieth-century manifestation of the Christ Impulse by diverting attention from the coming etheric Christ.
What it Means Today
The clearest present-day form of Steiner's triad is the longevity-biotechnology sector, and its clearest single instance is Altos Labs, launched in January 2022 with three billion dollars in private funding, Hal Barron as chief executive and Shinya Yamanaka, the 2012 Nobel laureate for induced pluripotent stem cells, as senior scientific advisor. Altos works on partial epigenetic reprogramming, turning a cell part of the way back toward a younger state without erasing what it is. Read against GA 178, the arrangement is exact. Capital plays the part of gold, cellular rejuvenation the part of health, and reprogramming the part of prolonged life. The company is private, its results proprietary, and the first beneficiaries whoever can pay.
The philosopher Hans Jonas saw the shape of the problem before the laboratories existed. In The Burden and Blessing of Mortality, published in the Hastings Center Report in 1992, Jonas argued that mortality is what makes room for the newly born, and that a world of indefinitely extended lives would be a world that had stopped beginning. Steiner's objection runs on a different axis. He does not deny that life can be lengthened. He asks who is permitted to know how.
Thalira synthesis: the test Steiner leaves is not whether gold, health and prolonged life can be reached, but whether the road to them stays open. A method published is spiritual science. The same method held inside a lodge, or inside a patent portfolio, is the group egotism GA 178 names.
