Causes Without Effects in Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's name for a phenomenon he set out in the lecture of 16 December 1917 at Dornach, printed in the cycle Historical Necessity and Freewill (GA 179): nature is crowded with causes that never arrive at an effect. Spawn laid in the ocean, seeds that never germinate, grain eaten before it can rise into a stalk, each carries a cause whose effect is interrupted. Steiner reads that interruption as a threshold rather than as waste. The arrested life rises as an elementary existence, a stage of being the Angeloi dream and human imagination can reach. Its mirror stands in the spiritual world, where effects appear for which no cause can be indicated, pressing toward us as imaginations that physical consciousness meets with antipathy. The pair was Steiner's argument against reading history as a chain of mechanical necessity.

Causes without effects is the first half of a law Steiner drew from ordinary observation of nature: far more is begun in the living world than is ever finished. He asked what becomes of the unfinished half, and answered that it does not vanish. It rises into a realm one step behind the physical, where imagination, not measurement, is the organ of perception.

Only a small part of these grow into real living beings. This, of course, does not only happen in the wide ocean, but in the whole of Nature. Consider how many life-germs are supposed to become living beings, even in the short space of one year! How much is meant to become alive and does not attain life, when eggs are laid which do not develop! Must we not say that all these germs of life contain causes that do not produce effects?

Three years before that lecture, the Norwegian marine biologist Johan Hjort published Fluctuations in the Great Fisheries of Northern Europe (1914), the report that founded modern fisheries science. Working through the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea in Copenhagen, Hjort had counted year classes in Norwegian herring and cod and found that one spawning season could yield a generation that carried the fishery for a decade, while the seasons on either side of it yielded almost nothing. His critical period hypothesis put the decisive event in the first days of larval life, when the great majority of eggs die before feeding has properly begun. Steiner, speaking at Dornach in December 1917, was reading the same census from the other side: countless causes laid down, a fraction of them arriving at an effect.

Hjort turned the loss into a statistic and asked which survivors matter. Steiner asked what the losses become. Thalira synthesis: the two questions are not rivals, because the fisheries scientist needs the number and the spiritual researcher needs the remainder, and only a materialism that has forgotten its own accounting can insist that the unrealised majority simply cancels. The practical move is small. Watch one spawning tide, one hedgerow, one sack of grain, and hold the count of what was begun beside the count of what arrived. That gap is where Steiner asked his Dornach listeners to look, and where cause and effect, as he put it that evening, begins to lose its meaning.
