But then it's interesting: when you breathe through one nostril, the exhaled air forms figures on the glass plate, just like snow! The exhaled air is not just a little crumb on it, but a figure. And the really interesting thing about it, I would say, is that if you hold your left nostril closed and breathe out, you get one figure; if you hold your right nostril closed and breathe out, you get a different figure. They are not even the same figures! So we can say: the air from you, from your own person, comes out in figures. It doesn't come out just as a drop, it comes out in figures, and even so strangely that the left nostril gives a different figure than the right nostril.
What it Means Today
Steiner never claimed the phenomenon for himself; physics already had a name for it. In 1911 Lord Rayleigh published a short note in Nature titled "Breath Figures," on the patterns breath deposits on glass, and John Aitken, the Scottish investigator of atmospheric dust, answered him in the same journal. The term stuck. In 1994, Widawski, Rawiso, and François showed in Nature that casting a polymer solution under moist airflow leaves honeycomb-patterned porous films behind: materials chemists now call this the breath figure method and use it to template membranes, sensors, and cell scaffolds. The observation itself is secure science. What Steiner adds in GA 351 is a different question rather than a different fact: he asks why a living being's out-breath carries form at all, and answers with the mucus of the lungs and the crystallizing moon-force behind frost flowers.
