The second rank of the third spiritual triad, who govern nations and peoples as Folk Spirits; one rotates as cosmic regent every 350 years, with Michael leading the present age since 1879.
Archangels in Anthroposophy are the rank of beings two evolutionary stages above the human, sitting between the Archai and the Angels in Steiner's nine-fold hierarchy. They govern entire peoples and nations as Folk Spirits, working into the etheric body of a country rather than the individual. The seven regency Archangels named in the Trithemius sequence and used by Steiner are Raphael, Gabriel, Uriel, Michael, Anael, Zachariel, and Oriphiel.
In Steiner's Own Words
If you imagine such beings, who are thus on the level of the spiritual hierarchies that we call archangels, you will have an idea of what is meant by "folk spirits," what are called the directing folk spirits of the earth. The folk spirits belong to the level of the archangels. We will see how they in turn direct the etheric or life body, and how they thereby work back into humanity and involve it in its own activity. When we look at the different peoples of our earth and single out individual ones, we will see in the peculiar weaving and life of these peoples, in what we call the special, characteristic qualities of these peoples, a reflection of what we can consider to be the mission of the folk spirits.
What it Means Today
The Archangelic rank, in Steiner's reading, is the hierarchy that explains why a people behaves as a people. A nation is not a sum of citizens with shared bureaucracy; it is a cohesive being whose temperaments are bathed in one Archangel's etheric aura. The Trithemius scheme, which Steiner adopted with care, assigns Raphael to Mercury, Gabriel to the Moon, Uriel to Mars, Michael to the Sun, Anael to Venus, Zachariel to Jupiter, and Oriphiel to Saturn. Each holds the regency of a cosmic age in turn. In November 1879, the regency passed from Gabriel to Michael; the leading Archangel of our present age is treated in detail in our entry on Michael (Archangel), where the Sun-impulse and the awakened intellect carry a particular task that this rank-level entry does not cover.
The practical instinct this teaching trains is geopolitical rather than mystical. Anthroposophic researchers around the Goetheanum, from Sergei Prokofieff's Michaelmas cycles to the ongoing work of the School of Spiritual Science in Dornach, treat the rotation of Archangelic regencies as a real factor in why epochs change voice. A modern reader does not need to accept the cosmology to use the diagnostic: ask which Folk Spirit a culture is currently breathing, and which it is failing to receive. Where Jung located the collective unconscious of a people, Steiner located a specific Archangelic being with a name, a sphere, and a 350-year tenure. The two readings cross-light each other without collapsing. Among the Archangelic regents who shaped European spiritual history, the Folk-Spirits worked through specific mystery-traditions — see Northern Mysteries for the Druidic and Germanic stream.
