The Last Human Faculty
Why your attention is collapsing, what the machine cannot do, and the hundred-year-old training that rebuilds the mind.
A 136-page book, a five-hour audiobook, and a complete thirty-day guided rebuild. No app. No subscription. About fifteen minutes a day.
seconds
That is roughly how long the average screen-facing attention now holds before it leaves, timed by researchers, not self-reported. Twenty years ago the same measure ran two and a half minutes. In a separate study published in Science, adults left alone with their own thoughts for fifteen minutes chose to give themselves electric shocks rather than sit with nothing. Two thirds of the men pressed the button. One man pressed it a hundred and ninety times.
Nobody was born with forty-seven seconds. It was trained, thousands of repetitions a day, by professionals. This matters, because a trained collapse is a reversible one.
A training, not a course
More than a century ago, Rudolf Steiner set down six exercises as foundation work: control of thinking, control of will, equanimity, positivity, open-mindedness, and the harmony that runs them together. Five minutes on one ordinary object. One small act nobody asked for. Three breaths between a feeling and its expression. The day walked backward each night before sleep. Small doses, fixed points, months on end.
He was not predicting machines. He was mapping two permanent directions in which a mind can be pulled: an intelligence indifferent to whether what it says is true, and a will that moves before its owner decides. The machine age has since built industries on both. The training is the middle ground, and it is held daily or not at all.
The Last Human Faculty traces the collapse through the current research, the two deformations through Steiner's actual texts with every quotation verified against the Collected Works, and the six exercises at full working depth: the method, the metrics, the failure modes, and what each failure means.
What you receive
- The book. The Last Human Faculty, 136 pages, twelve chapters in three parts: the diagnosis, the two ways to lose a mind, the training.
- The audiobook. The complete text, narrated. Twelve chapters, 5.2 hours, yours to keep on any device.
- The 30-Day Rebuild. A second volume that runs the training with you: a page for every day, the exact session, the day's trap, and the evening line. With the Rebuild Ledger, a fill-in tracker for the whole month, and eight guided practice sessions, forty-one minutes in the same voice, with real timed silences.
On day zero you measure one number: how many seconds your mind holds a single object before it leaves. You retest on days seven, fourteen, twenty-one, and twenty-eight, and plot the line yourself. No testimonial is manufactured for you, because thirty days from now you will have your own data, and your own data is the only account that was ever going to convince you.

EnterQuestions, answered
How much time does it honestly take?
About fifteen minutes a day: five for the morning exercise, about five for the evening review, under a minute for the will act, and the rest lives inside moments your day already contains. The book says fifteen and means fifteen.
Do I need to know anything about Steiner, or believe anything?
No. The exercises are practices, not doctrines. Every claim in the book stays inside what can be verified, every quotation is checked against the Collected Works, and you answer only to your own thirty days of data.
Is this meditation?
It is close in posture and different in mechanism. Open-awareness meditation observes; this training constructs. Five minutes of deliberately ordered thinking about one ordinary object trains the specific faculty the feeds took, which is attention under your own command.
What arrives, and when?
Instantly, by download link at checkout: PDF books typeset for reading on any screen or for printing, MP3 audio that plays anywhere, no app and no account. The files are yours permanently.
I have the free guide. Is the book just more of that?
The First Five Minutes gives you the first exercise and the backward review. The book gives the complete system those two belong to: all six exercises at working depth, the research, the two deformations, and the month-by-month arc. The Rebuild then runs that month with you, day by day.
The room is open
Every queue, every red light, every pause between tasks asks the same question the shock study asked: what is your mind when nothing is feeding it. Thirty days from now, that question can have a different answer, and you will have the numbers to prove it to the only person who matters.
Not ready to buy? The First Five Minutes is free, and many people feel the difference on the first night.
